Feb. 18, 1992 New Hampshire Presidential Primary
While the proposition that in America "anyone can grow up to be president" is questionable, the New Hampshire primary does offer the opportunity for almost anyone who meets the constitutional requirements to run for president. In addition to the major candidates, dozens of other lesser known/non-major/minor candidates participated in the Feb. 18 New Hampshire primary. An astounding 62 candidates made the ballot—25 Republicans, 36 Democrats and 1 Libertarian. The filing requirements for candidates to appear on the ballot are straightforward, and the state's small size makes it manageable to campaign in. The vast majority of candidates were men. In addition to the candidates on the ballot, well organized write-in campaigns for Mario Cuomo and Ralph Nader drew significant attention and won more support than any of the minor candidates. The Cuomo write-in effort tallied 7,376 votes (6,577 Dem. and 799 Rep.) and the Nader effort 6,312 votes (3,054 Dem. and 3,258 Rep.). Among the "rest of the field candidates" on the ballot, there were a few recognizable names including comedian Pat Paulsen (R) (603 votes), actor Tom Laughlin (D) (3,251 votes), and former Sen. Gene McCarthy (D) (212 votes). Irvine Mayor Larry Agran (D) made perhaps the strongest pitch for being recognized as a major candidate, but finished ninth in the Democratic primary with 335 votes, just behind Lenora Fulani (D), who had a bit of national recognition as a result of her 1988 run, at 402 votes. Depending on resources, non-major candidates did events, mailings and newspaper ads and so forth. Some of them opened offices to coordinate their activities, and there was also a shared office where visitors could find out about and meet some of the minor candidates. Many of the lesser-knowns received only a few dozen votes and their campaigns ended in the Granite State; a few were running national campaigns and continued on.
