State
of Hawaii Office of ElectionsPlurality: 113,224 votes (28.97 percentage points). Notes: Seeking a second term, Gov. David Ige (D) faced state House minority leader Andria Tupola (R). In the Aug. 11 primaries, Ige surprised some observers by fending off a challenge from U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa by 50.2% to 43.4%. On the Republican side, Tupola obtained 53.0% of the vote, defeating John Carroll (33.7%) and Ray L'Heureux (8.8%). Curiously, the running mates are selected in the primary as well, but then appear as part of the party ticket, not on a separate line, on the Nov. 6 ballot. Both Democratic and Republican lieutenant governor contests were very close; Democrats chose state Sen. Josh Green and Republicans businesswoman Marissa Kerns. Tensions between Kerns and Tupola made the news several times during the fall campaign. There were two general election televised debates from Honolulu, the first on Oct. 15 at KHON2 studios (+) and the second on Oct. 29 at KITV studios (+). Campaign Managers: David Ige: Michael Yadao (Sept. 2017) Pacific region manager (Sept. 2016-April 2018) and consultant (July 2015-Sept. 2016) with CALIBRE Systems, Inc. in Honolulu.
