DEMOCRATIC PICK-UP
Notes:
Gov. Linda Lingle (R) was term limited.  U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D) defeated Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona (R) for a Democratic pick-up.

Abercrombie was a fixture in Hawaii politics, having first run for office in 1970 and served in the Hawaii House, Hawaii Senate and Honolulu City Council before his election to Congress.  He announced his candidacy in Mar. 2009 and resigned from Congress effective Feb. 28, 2010 to focus on his campaign.
His opponent, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, was elected Mayor in 2004 and re-elected in 2008, but resigned from the position in July 2010 to focus on his campaign.  In the Sept. 18 Democratic primary (>), Abercrombie defeated Hannemann by 142,304 votes (60.14%) to 90,590 (38.29%).   Brian Schatz, a former state representative, CEO of Helping Hands Hawaii, and chair of the Hawaii Democratic Party, topped a field of seven candidates to win the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.

Aiona, who serve as a judge before his tenure as lieutenant governor, won the Republican primary with 93.0% of the vote.  In the lieutenant governor primary state Rep. Lynn Finnegan tallied 68.7% of the vote to defeat Adrienne King.

Abercrombie and Aiona engaged in general election debates including:

Oct. 6 - Hawaii Public Radio and the Maui Economic Development Board at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (>);

Oct. 18 - at Kealakehe High School in Kailua Kona;

Oct. 22 - hosted by KITV-TV in Honolulu (>).
