State of Hawaii Office of Elections

Notes:
Sen. Brian Schatz (D), first appointed to the Senate in Dec. 2012, easily won a second full term, defeating state Rep. Bob McDermott (R), Emma Jane Avila Pohlman (G), Feena Bonoan (L) and Dan Decker (A).

Schatz won the Aug. 13 Democratic primary with 87.7% of 243,254 votes tallied.  McDermott won the Republican primary with 31.9% of the 64,544 votes tallied followed by Timothy Dalhouse (21.3%), Wallyn Kanoelani Christian (11.7%), Steven Bond (7.9%) and Asia Lavonne (7.6%).  Dalhouse, a Marine Corps veteran and founder and CEO of a global training company, put over $250,000 of his own money into his campaign.  McDermott, who represents District 40 (Ewa Beach), is in his seventh term in the state legislature and is Assistant Minority Leader.  He served as a Marine officer in the Gulf War.

The general election proved to be a quiet affair.
McDermott did not raise or spend money and ran a very low key campaign.  He made shutting down the Red Hill fuel tanks (>) a central issue of his campaign.

Meanwhile, Schatz had a huge warchest; his campaign raised $4.7 million, spent $4.8 million and had cash on hand of $2.2 million (>).

Of the third party candidates, the libertarian Bonoan ran the most active and engaged campaign.  For example, on Oct. 13 she was the only one of the five Senate candidates to show up at the West Maui Taxpayer Alliance candidate forum.  Bonoan also ran for State Senate in 2020.  A Navy veteran, she serves as chief of operations of the Hawaii Veteran Cannabis Alliance.

There were no debates in this race.
