 State of Hawaii Office of Elections

Notes:
In a stunning result, Gov. Neil Abercrombie (D) lost the Aug. 9 primary to state Sen. David Ige (D) by a more than two to one margin, ending a political career which began in the 1970s.  Abercrombie touted tough decisions, but some of his proposals such as a tax on pensions and soda tax were unpopular and his relations with the legislature were rocky (1, 2).

In the general election, Ige defeated former Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona (R)—who was also the Republican nominee in 2010—as well as former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann (I) and Jeff Davis (L).

The three major candidates engaged in debates, including:

Sept. 25 - PBS Hawai'i (>);

Sept. 30 - sponsored by KITV News and Honolulu Civil Beat;

Oct. 7 - sponsored by KHON2 and AARP Hawaii; and

Oct. 15 - sponsored by Hawaii News Now and the Honolulu Advertiser (>).
