State of Hawaii Office of Elections

Notes:
U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye (D), first elected in 1962, had little difficulty winning a ninth term, trouncing financial advisor and former state Rep. Cam Cavasso (R) and three other candidates.

Primaries took place on Sept. 18.  Inouye easily defeated Andy Woerner.  Cavasso, who was also the 2004 Republican nominee against Inouye, easily defeated John Roco and Eddie Pirkowski.

A decorated World War II veteran, Inouye was first elected to office in 1954 as a member of the Hawaii Territorial House of Representatives.  Starting in 2009 he chaired the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee.  In June 2010, following the death of Sen. Robert Byrd (WV), he became Senate President pro tem, and in September he celebrated his 86th birthday.

The race was financially non-competitive.  Open Secrets reports the Inouye campaign spent $5.7 million and finished with cash on hand of $1.3 million compared to $266,470 spent by the Cavasso campaign (>).
