2024 SENATE RACE OVERVIEW As expected, Republicans regained control of the Senate. With backing of four Independents Democrats had held a narrow majority, but they were defending 19 seats to just 11 for Republicans. Republicans defeated incumbents in Montana (Tester), Ohio (Brown), and Pennsylvania (Casey), and also picked up West Virginia (Manchin). Twelve new senators were elected, the most since 2014. Before Nov. 5, 2024: 47 held by Democrats, 4 by Independents, 49 by Republicans. 34 seats at stake: 19 held by Democrats, 4 by Independents, 11 by Republicans. 9 seats open: 5 held by Democrats, 2 by Independents, 2 by Republicans. D: Laphonza Butler (CA), Tom Carper (DE), Ben Cardin (MD), Debbie Stabenow (MI), Bob Menendez (NJ). I: Kyrsten Sinema (AZ), Joe Manchin (WV). R: Mike Braun (IN), Mitt Romney (UT). 3 incumbents defeated in the general election: 3 Democrats. D: Jon Tester (MT), Sherrod Brown (OH), Bob Casey (PA). 1 open seat flipped: 1 Republican pick-up. WV: I to R. 12 new Senators elected: 6 Republicans, 6 Democrats. R: Jim Banks (IN), Tim Sheehy (MT), Bernie Moreno (OH), David McCormick, John Curtis (UT), Jim Justice (WV).
