Plurality: 75,479 votes (31.43 percentage points). ND
Secretary of State
Notes: Sen. John Hoeven (R), first elected to the Senate in 2010, won a third term defeating Katrina Christiansen (D), an assistant professor specializing in agricultural engineering at the University of Jamestown, and conservative state Rep. Rick Becker (I). At the NDGOP convention in Bismarck in April 2022, Hoeven fended off a challenge from Becker for the party's endorsement by 1,224 to 1,037 votes, and in the June 14 primary, Hoeven handily defeated Riley Kuntz by 77.83% to 22.44%. In the Democratic-NPL primary Christiansen won the party's endorsement at the convention in late March and defeated Michael J. Steele, an antiques dealer and appraiser and activist from Fargo, in the June vote by 76.78% to 73.11%. All appeared set for Hoeven to coast to a lopsided election in November. However, on Aug. 15, Becker, having stood out the primary, announced he would run in the general election as an independent. He submitted the requisite 1,000 signatures by the Sept. 6 deadline. Becker is a plastic surgeon and commercial real estate owner. He was first elected to the House in 2012 representing District 7 (Bismarck), and announced in Jan. 2022 that he would retire at the end of his term. In the legislature he founded the conservative Bastiat Caucus. Before launching his Senate primary bid in Feb. 2022, he hosted "No Apologies with Becker" on BEK TV (>). He also ran for governor in 2015-16. Democrats saw a possible path to victory if Hoeven and Becker split the conservative/Republican vote. Christiansen and Becker debated in Washburn on BEK TV on Oct. 3 (Hoeven declined) (>). Hoeven, Christiansen and Becker debated on Prairie Public on Oct. 26 (>). Hoeven had a substantial financial advantage. He raised $4.4 million, spent $5.6 million and finished with cash on hand of $603,452. The Becker campaign reported total receipts of $276,195 including a $100,000 loan from the candidate, and total disbursements of $252,458; the Christiansen campaign raised $112,516 raised and spent $109,715.
