 ND Secretary of State

Notes: Gov. Jack Dalrymple (R) announced on Aug. 24, 2015 that he would not seek re-election, opening up this seat.  Republicans won all eight statewide races from president to public service commissioner by very lopsided margins; the Democratic candidates failed to reach 30% of the vote in any of the races.

Although delegates to the Republican state convention in April endorsed North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, former Microsoft executive Doug Burgum bested Stenehjem in the June 14 primary by 59.47% to 38.59% to secure the nomination.  State Rep. Marvin Nelson faced no competition for the Democratic-NPL nomination.  Also on the ballot was Fargo businessman Marty Riske (L).

Burgum, Nelson and Riske engaged in three debates:

Aug. 25 - Greater North Dakota Chamber Policy Summit in Bismarck.

Oct. 3 - North Dakota Newspaper Association in Bismarck (>).

Oct. 10 - Prairie Public Television and AARP in Fargo (>).

FollowTheMoney.org reported the Burgum campaign received contributions totaling $1.9 million, including $1.4 million from the candidate the Stenehjem campaign $901,118, and the Nelson campaign $108,251 (>).
