 ND Secretary of State

Notes:
Gov. Jack Dalrymple (R) easily won a full term, defeating Senate Minority Leader Ryan Taylor (D-NPL) and two independent candidates.

Dalrymple became governor after Gov. John Hoeven (R) was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010; he was sworn in on Dec. 7, 2010.  Previously he was elected lieutenant governor in 2000, 2004 and 2008 and served eight terms in the North Dakota House of Representatives.  Dalrymple launched his election campaign on Nov. 1, 2011.

Taylor, first elected to the state Senate in 2002, served as minority leader from 2011-13.  He manages the family ranch near Towner, runs Sandhill Communications, and is the author of the "Cowboy Logic" column and several books.  After a three month listening phase, he announced his candidacy in Dec. 2011.  He announced Ellen Chaffee, the former president of Valley City State University and Mayville State University,
as his running mate on Mar. 14, 2012.  Taylor summarized his campaign on his LinkedIn page:

"
Ran a vigorous yearlong, statewide campaign to provide North Dakota with the leadership needed to take it through times of profound change brought on by the biggest oil boom in its history. Reached out to citizens of every age, geography and status to present platforms on energy development and stewardship, improved student educational opportunities and ethical responsibilities for this special moment in time. Unsuccessful at the ballot box against a well-funded, established incumbent, but successful in elevating the debate of critical statewide issues demanding thoughtful conversation."

Dalrymple and Taylor engaged in two debates:

Sept. 5  - North Dakota Broadcasters Association in Bismarck (>).

Oct. 5 - Prairie Public Broadcasting and AARP in Fargo [half-hour] (>).

This race was not competitive financially.  FollowTheMoney.org reported that the Dalrymple campaign received contributions totaling $3.6 million compared to $651,284 for the Taylor campaign (>).
