CA Secretary of
State Notes: Sen. Alex Padilla (D), appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) to fill the seat vacated by Kamala Harris when she became Vice President, easily won both the race to complete Harris' term and a full term, defeating attorney Mark P. Meuser. Prior to his appointment to the U.S. Senate, Padilla served as California Secretary of State; he was elected in 2014 and 2018. Previously Padilla served two terms in the State Senate. He started his political career on the Los Angeles City Council; he was first elected in 1999 at the age of 26. Padilla is the son of Mexican immigrants. Meuser's campaign website states, "Over the last year, Meuser has been involved in 22 lawsuits brought against Newsom for his unconstitutional usurpation of power as a result of COVID-19." Meuser also ran for Secretary of State in 2018, when he lost to Padilla, and for State Senate in 2012. Padilla had a huge financial advantage in the race, reporting, as of Nov. 28, $11.9 million raised, $4.3 million spent and $7.6 million in cash on hand compared about $1.0 million dollars raised and spent by the Meuser campaign (>). June 7 Primary In the June 7 primary, Californians voted in a "special vacancy election" to fill the remainder of Harris' term and in the regular election for the full six-year term. Nine candidates (three Democrats including Padilla, five Republicans and one No Party Preference) ran to fill the unexpired term. Twenty-four candidates (six Democrats including Padilla, 11 Republicans and seven other parties/no preference) were on the ballot for the full term. Padilla and Meuser advanced to the general election.
