REPUBLICAN PICK UP

Notes:  Gov. Bill Richardson (D) was term limited.
Doña Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez (R) defeated Lt. Gov. Diane Denish (D) (>) to become the first woman elected governor of the state.   There was some weariness with Richardson (+), and a central element of Martinez's message was criticism of the "Richardson-Denish adminstration."

Debates included:

Aug. 19 - debate on education at Eldorado High School in Albuquerque;

Oct. 17 - KOAT and Albuquerque Journal (>);

Oct. 21 - at KOB-TV studios in Albuquerque (>):

June 1 Primaries
In the Republican primary, Martinez won with 62,006 votes (50.7%) followed by former NM Republican Party chair Allen Weh at 33,727 (27.6%), PR firm executive Doug Turner 14,166 (11.6%), attorney Pete Domenici Jr. 8,630 (7.0%) and state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones 3,740 (3.1%).  For lieutenant governor John A. Sanchez, the 2002 Republican gubernatorial nominee, won 39.6% of the vote defeating Kent Cravens and Brian K. Moore.

In the Democratic primary for Governor, Denish was unchallenged except for a write-in candidate.  Five candidates vied for the lieutenant governor nomination; attorney Brian S. Colón won the primary with 28.67%, thereby joining Denish on the ticket.  He defeated former Albuquerque CAO Lawrence D. Rael (24.39%), state Rep. Jose Campos (20.41%), state Sen. Linda L
ópez (14.57%) and state Sen. Jerry Ortiz y Pino (11.97%).
