 KS Secretary of State

REPUBLICAN PICK UP
Notes:
On Apr. 28, 2009 the U.S. Senate confirmed Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D) to be Secretary of Health and Human Services, and then Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson (D), a former Republican, was sworn in as governor.  Parkinson opted not to run for governor in 2010, creating the open seat.  U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback (R) easily defeated state Sen. Tom Holland (D), Andrew Gray (L) and Ken Cannon (Reform) for a Republican pick up.

Brownback was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996 after serving one term in the House, and seven years as Kansas Secretary of Agriculture.  He unsuccessfully sought the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, withdrawing in Oct. 2007 (>).
In the Aug. 3 primary, Brownback defeated Joan Heffington by a 82.1% to 17.8% margin.

Holland was unopposed for the Democratic nomination.  He runs an IT consulting business in Baldwin City (Topeka area), and was elected to the State House in 2002 and the State Senate in 2008.

Brownback and Holland debated at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson on Sept. 11.  The four candidates on the ballot participated in the only televised debate at KWCH-12 studios in Wichita on Oct. 7 (>).
