 KS Secretary of State

Notes:
Sen. Jerry Moran (R) faced little difficulty in his bid for a third term, defeating Mark Holland (D), a third generation United Methodist pastor and former Mayor/CEO of the Unified Government of Kansas City, Kansas and Wyandotte County, and David Graham (L), an attorney from Overland Park, who was selected at the LPKS convention in Wichita on Apr. 23.

The last time Kansans elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate was in 1930 (>).

There was no debate in this race.

Moran had a huge financial advantage.  His campaign raised $7.5 million, spent $5.3 million and had cash on hand of $3.4 million compared to $904,313 raised, $866,795 spent, and $37,518 in cash on hand for the Holland campaign (>).

August 2 Primaries
In the Aug. 2 Republican primary,
Moran defeated Joan Farr, a frequent candidate who has residence in both Oklahoma and Kansas, by 80.47% to 19.53%.  Six candidates ran in the Democratic primary.  Holland topped the field with 38.05% followed by Paul Buskirk, a University of Kansas athletics administrator (20.16%), Patrick Wiesner an attorney and CPA who was the 2016 Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate (17.65%), Mike Andra from Wichita (12.55%), Robert Klingenberg from Salina, running as a leftist, working class candidate (8.03%), and Mike Soetaert, a pro-life Democrat (3.55%).

Also on Aug. 2, Kansas voters made national news, rejecting by a 59% to 41% margin the "Value Them Both" constitutional amendment, which would have said that "the constitution of the state of Kansas does not require government funding of abortion and does not create or secure a right to abortion."  Moran's PAC donated $50,000 to the Value Them Both campaign.

Campaign Managers
Jerry Moran:  Alex Richard, who has been Moran's state director since Jan. 2017, and has worked for Moran since Jan. 2006, is the highest paid staffer.
