 KS Secretary of State

Notes:
This was an open seat as Sen. Sam Brownback (R) opted to run for governor.  U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran (R) easily defeated Lisa Johnston (D) as well as Michael Wm. Dann (L) and Joe K. Bellis (F).

Republicans saw a highly competitive primary between Moran and U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt (1, 2).  Moran was first elected to Congress in 1996 representing the 1st CD (Western KS); he previously served eight years in the State Senate, including two years as majority leader.  Tiahrt was first elected to Congress in 1994 representing the 4th CD (Southeastern Kansas); he previously served one term in the State Senate.  When the votes were tallied in the Aug. 3 contest, Moran defeated Tiahrt by 163,483 votes (49.7%) to 146,702 (44.6%) with the remainder split between accountant Tom Little and Bob Londerholm.

Five candidates competed for the Democratic nomination.  Lisa Johnston, who has worked in various positions in higher education including as an assistant dean at Baker University, won with 25,695 votes (31.2%) followed by Charles Schollenberger at 19,426 votes (23.6%), David Haley 15,731 (19.1%), Patrick Weisner 13,481 votes(16.4%) and Robert A. Conroy 7,857 votes (9.5%).

There were no general election debates in this race.

Moran had a huge financial advantage.  Open Secrets reported his campaign spent $6.5 million compared to just $31,235 for the Johnston campaign (>), although these figures include Moran campaign spending for the competitive primary.

Campaign Managers:
Jerry Moran went through several campaign managers, starting with
Aaron Trost (to Feb. 2010), then Paul Moore (Feb.-mid-Apr. 2010), and finally Karl Hansen.
