DEMOCRATIC PICK-UP

Notes: 
Gov. Jodi Rell (R) announced on Nov. 9, 2009 that she would not seek re-election.  Former Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy (D) narrowly defeated businessman and former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Tom Foley (R) for a Democratic pick-up.  Also on the November ballot was Thomas Marsh (IP), a Republican first selectman from Chester.

Malloy served as Stamford Mayor for 14 years, from Dec. 1995 to Nov. 2009.  He also ran for governor in 2006, losing the primary to New Haven Mayor John DeStefano.  Foley, who served as ambassador from 2006-09, had started out as a candidate for U.S. Senate, announcing on June 3, 2009.  After Gov. Rell decided not to seek another term, he announced on Dec. 3 that he would instead run for governor. 

In addition to Foley,
Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele and Oz Griebel sought the Republican nomination.  Foley won the endorsement of the Connecticut Republican Convention in Hartford on May 22, 2010, and went on (>) to win the Aug. 10 Republican primary.  With 120,171 votes tallied, Foley won 50,792 votes (42.3%) followed by Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele at 46,989 (39.1%) and Oz Griebel at 22,390 (18.6%).  Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton won the primary for lieutenant governor.

In Democratic contest, Malloy faced businessman Ned Lamont.  Malloy won the party's endorsement at the Connecticut Democratic Convention on May 22, and then won the primary.  With 180,926 votes tallied, Malloy won 103,154 votes (57.0%) to 77,772 (43.0%) for Lamont.  Comptroller Nancy Wyman won the primary for lieutenant governor.

In the general election there were numerous debates and forums including:

Oct. 5 - FOXCT/Hartford Courant at The Bushnell Center in Hartford (>);

Oct. 13 - The Day/WTNH at the Garde Center in New London;

Oct. 19 - Connecticut Public Television, WNPR (CT Public Radio) and WFSB-TV Ch. 3 at Fairfield University;

Oct. 26 - NBC Connecticut.
