 CT Secretary of State

Notes:
Sen. Chris Dodd (D) announced on Jan. 6, 2010 that he would not seek re-election.  Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal (D) defeated former WWE CEO Linda McMahon (R) and two other candidates to keep the seat in Democratic hands.

Following Dodd's announcement, Blumenthal quickly entered the race.  He was first elected Attorney General in 1990 and was serving his fifth term; previously he served in the Connecticut Senate and House, and as U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut during the Carter Administration.  In May, following reporting by the New York Times, Blumenthal faced controversy over misleading statements in which he had stated or implied multiple times over the years that he had served in Vietnam.

McMahon received Connecticut Republicans' endorsement at their convention in Hartford on May 21, but former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons proceeded with a primary challenge and broker/economist Peter David Schiff successfully petitioned to get on the ballot.  In the Aug. 10 primary, McMahon defeated Simmons and Schiff by 49.4% to 27.8% and 22.8% with 122,321 votes tallied.

Blumenthal and McMahon debated several times:

Oct. 4 - at the Bushnell in Hartford hosted by FOX Connecticut and the Hartford Courant (>);

Oct. 7 - in Norwalk, hosted by business groups and broadcast by News 12 Connecticut (>);

Oct. 12 - at the Garde Arts Center in New London, sponsored by News 8 and The Day in cooperation with the League of Women Voters (>).

McMahon's campaign was almost entirely self-financed; she spent a bit over $50 million of her own funds.  By comparison, according to Open Secrets, the Blumenthal campaign spent $8.7 million (>).
