1984 Democratic Presidential Primaries

Eight major Democratic candidates entered the race for the 1984 Democratic presidential nomination seeking to challenge President Ronald Reagan: Gov. Reuben Askew (FL), Sen. Alan Cranston (CA), Sen. John Glenn (OH), Sen. Gary Hart (CO), Sen. Fritz Hollings (SC), civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, former Sen. George McGovern (SD), and former Vice President Walter Mondale (MN).  The field largely took shape in the first quarter of 1983; Cranston was first to announce (Feb. 2), followed by Hart (Feb. 17), Mondale (Feb. 21), Askew (Feb. 23), Hollings (Apr. 18), Glenn (Apr. 21), McGovern (Sept. 13) and Jackson (Jan. 16, 1984).  Cranston (Feb. 29), Askew (Mar. 1), Hollings (Mar. 1), McGovern (Mar. 14) and Glenn (Mar. 16) dropped out relatively early, while Jackson, Hart and Mondale carried through to June.

Below are examples of literature from some of the campaigns.  For examples from all the campaigns, see the excellent: www.4president.org/ocmi1984.htm
