Issue Summary

Jesse Jackson for President Committee

QUITE APART FROM THE SLOGANEERING OF THE "NEW RIGHT" AND THE "NEW IDEAS", IS JESSE JACKSON, A CANDIDATE WHO IS OFFERING COMPASSIONATELY AGGRESSIVE AND CHALLENGING LEADERSHIP FOR ALL AMERICANS.

FOREIGN POLICY:

EL SALVADOR--"We must stand with the church and the poor of El Salvador in their fight for justice rather than the oppression of the landed gentry. American economic and military aid to El Salvador must be linked to improvements in their human rights record."

MIDDLE EAST--"Israel must be allowed to exist within secure and internationally recognized borders. The Palestinians must have the right to self-determination or a homeland. The sovereignty of Lebanon must be respected and it must not be partitioned. We must have normalized ties with the Arab World--our interests are
too many and our friends are too few--and we must talk to the PLO. America must use its diplomatic, economic and military might to reconcile the waring factions--."

PEACE AND DISARMAMENT:
"As President, one of my first acts would be to launch an unprecedented and aggressive peace campaign to put a halt to the nuclear arms race, and a speedy but rational process for arms reductions. I would never endanger this country's security, but we must be willing to take some risks."

THE ECONOMY:
Full Employment--"There is no more pressing domestic issue that to 'Put America Back To Work'. White males are not losing their jobs to women, Blacks and Hispanics because of affirmative action. All of us are losing our jobs because the corporations took President Reagan's three-year $750 billion tax break to the rich and used it to buy other corporations, replace workers with machines, and to ship American jobs to cheap labor markets abroad."

IMMIGRATION:
Immigration should not be blamed for problems caused by an economic system that caters to the rich and powerful. The pending Simpson-Mazzoli Bill, takes the wrong approach to immigration reform.
Instead, enforcement of existing labor laws would do more to protect both U.S. and undocumented workers. Employers must be forced to upgrade wages and working conditions: to end the cycle of exploitation.

ENERGY:
"Nuclear energy is too costly and too dangerous. It's not a question of whether we will switch to the safer and more economical forms of renewable energy, but how quickly and how orderly we will make the transition."

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS OF WOMEN:
"As a matter of public policy, I support the right of free choice relative to abortions. I am opposed to the Hyde Amendment because it denies equal protection under the law to all citizens. Poor women should not be denied equal protection under the law because they are poor. I also oppose a Constitutional Amendment outlawing abortions. It is not right to impose private religious and moral positions on public policy as a matter of law."

CHILD CARE:
''I support the refundable child-care tax credit, including raising the maximum from its current level of 30 percent to 50 percent, which would include low-income women who currently receive no benefit; increased federal and state funding for child-care for working parents and parents still attending school; and new creative forms of child-care adapted to the needs, schedules and budgets of all kinds of families."

NATIONAL GAY RIGHTS BILL:
"As a matter of public policy I am fully committed to equal protection under the law. Thus, I support S430 which would add 'sexual orientation' to Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. During my recent speech before the Human Rights Campaign Fund in New York City, I reaffirmed by support for and inclusion of gays and lesbians as part of the Rainbow Coalition of the Rejected."

ECONOMIC EQUITY ACT:
"The federal government should establish strong criteria to assure equal pay for jobs of comparable value. I would support all legislation designed to achieve that end."

THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT:
"As a civil rights leader, I have fought for the past ten years for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Without ERA, over half of our nation's population will be denied equal protection under the law. Having spent all of my adult life in public service as a civil rights leader, I think my record in the area of equal rights in unparalleled among the announced candidates."

"THE OLD MINORITIES--BLACKS, HISPANICS, WOMEN, PEACE ACTIVISTS, ENVIRONMENTALISTS, YOUTH, THE ELDERLY, SMALL FARMERS, SMALL BUSINESSPERSONS, POOR PEOPLE, GAYS AND LESBIANS--IF WE REMAIN
APART, WILL CONTINUE TO BE A MINORITY. BUT, IF WE COME TOGETHER, THE OLD MINORITIES CONSTITUTE A NEW MAJORITY. THAT IS HOW I PROPOSE TO BE NOMINATED AND ELECTED PRESIDENT."
