Secretary of State
Notes: Sen. Mike Crapo (R), first elected in 1998, won a fifth term. Crapo, 71, previously served three terms in the U.S. House and was a member of the Idaho Senate from 1984-92. He defeated David Roth, 41, executive director of the Bonneville Youth Development Council in Idaho Falls, former chair of Bonneville County Democrats and a 2020 candidate for the state legislature who is openly gay, by more than 30 percentage points. Scott Oh Cleveland (I), an independent conservative who runs an investment and brokerage firm in Eagle, fared relatively well, tallying almost 50,000 votes. Rounding out the field were Idaho Sierra Law (Carta Reale Sierra) (L), a frequent candidate from Pocatello, who as Idaho Lorax has waged a crusade against uranium contamination; and another frequent candidate Ray Writz (C). In the May 17, 2022 Republican primary, Crapo topped a field of five candidates, garnering 67.13% of the vote. In the Democratic primary, Roth defeated Ben Pursley, a businessman from Boise, by 57.80% to 42.20%. Crapo, Roth and Cleveland debated on Idaho Public Television on Oct. 3 (broadcast on Oct. 4) (>). The Crapo campaign raised $7.4 million, spent $7.8 million and had $2.5 million in cash on hand compared to $102,679 raised for the Cleveland campaign and $88,533 raised for the Roth campaign (>).
