 UT Elections

Notes:
Gov. Gary Herbert (R) was elected to fill out the remainder of Gov. Jon Huntsman (R)'s term, defeating Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon (D) and two other candidates by a wide marginHerbert, who had been serving as lieutenant governor, was sworn in on Aug. 11, 2009 after Huntsman resigned to take up the post of U.S. Ambassador to China.  .

Corroon was elected mayor in 2004 and re-elected in 2008.  He officially launched his campaign on Jan. 12, 2010   On May 3, he announced state Rep. Sheryl Allen (R), a Republican who was retiring after eight terms in the legislature, as his running mate (>).

Herbert and Corroon debated multiple times (according to news reports there were eight debates scheduled) including:

Sept. 23 - KUED-TV in Salt Lake City

Sept. 30 - at KUTV's studio in Salt Lake City;

Oct. 1 - in Provo;

Oct. 6 - at Utah Valley University in Orem;

Oct. 19 - town hall meeting
broadcast by KSL-TV from the University of Utah.

Corroon repeatedly charged, in person and in campaign ads, that Herbert was being influenced by big donors, but drew criticism for running an unduly negative campaign.  Nonetheless, the outcome of this race never appeared in doubt;
the last time a Democrat was elected governor was Gov. Scott Matheson's re-election in 1980.
