Elections
Notes: On May 8, 2010, 3,500 delegates were gathered at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City for the Utah State Republican Convention (>). Sen. Bob Bennett (R), seeking a fourth term, finished a distant third in the second round of voting, and did not qualify for the June 22 primary. It was a shock to the establishment and an early success for the Tea Party movement in the 2010 cycle. Businessman Tim Bridgewater and attorney Mike Lee engaged in a closely fought primary contest (>). In solidly Republican Utah, the winner would be heavily favored over businessman Sam Granato (D) in the general election. Lee's experience included clerking for U.S. Supreme Cout Justice Samuel Alito, general counsel to Gov. Jon Huntsman, and assistant U.S. attorney. His father served as an assistant U.S. attorney general and as soliciter general in the Reagan administration. Bridgewater, a businessman, had also served as chairman of the Utah County Republican Party and ran for Congress in 2002 and 2004. Lee defeated Bridgewater by 98,512 votes (51.20%) to 93,905 votes (48.80%). In the general election, there were four debates. The three candidates—Lee, Granato and Scott N. Bradley (C)—debated at KUED-TV studios in Salt Lake City on Sept. 16 (>). Lee and Granato debated at KBYU, taped on Oct. 12; on KSL-TV's "Sunday Edition with Bruce Lindsay," taped on Oct. 22 (broadcast Oct. 24); and on KSL Radio's "Doug Wright Show" on Oct. 28. Open Secrets reports the Lee campaign, which did have the competitive primary, spent $1.7 million compared to $290,629 for the Granato campaign (>).
