Department of StatePlurality: 357,975 votes (8.97 percentage points). REPUBLICAN PICK UP Notes: Gov. Ed Rendell (D) was term limited, and after his activist tenure there was some sentiment for change. Pennsylvania voters had only two choices on the ballot in November. Attorney General Tom Corbett (R) defeated Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato (D) in a convincing manner, carrying 63 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties, and even eking out a 460-vote win in Allegheny County. Primaries were held on May 18. In the Democratic primary, Onorato won 463,575 votes (45.07%) followed by State Auditor Jack Wagner at 248,338 (24.15%), state Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams at 185,784 (18.06%) and Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel at 130,799 (12.72%). State Rep. Scott Conklin narrowly won the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor with 35.30% followed by former Philadelphia City Controller Jonathan Saidel (34.89%) and former Commonwealth Court Judge Doris Smith-Ribner (29.81%). In the Republican primary, Corbett defeated state Rep. Sam Rohrer by 589,249 votes (68.75%) to 267,893 (31.25%). Nine candidates vied for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor; Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley finished on top with 26.21% followed by businessman Chet Beiler (20.51%). Corbett began the general election campaign as the favorite. Corbett and Oronato participated in three debates: Sept. 27 - Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry annual dinner in Hershey; Oct. 16 - hosted by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters broadcast by WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh; and Oct. 18 - League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania and WPVI-TV 6 at WPVI-TV studios in Philadelphia (>). According to FollowtheMoney.org, the Corbett campaign raised $28.6 million to $25.1 million for the Onorato campaign (>).
