"Pennsylvania needs new jobs and real reform. I'm running for governor to help create those jobs and turn Harrisburg around."
– Dan Onorato

Time magazine has called the Western Pennsylvania region the "one economic bright spot on Main Street," due in part to all the work that Dan Onorato has done to rebuild the economy as Allegheny County Executive, and before that as County Controller.

Dan Onorato has made a career of fighting for us, not the status quo. As Governor, he will bring that same focus on job creation to every region of Pennsylvania.

Dan Onorato and Scott Conklin know how to clean up government and create new jobs.

Dan has balanced the budget of Pennsylvania's second-largest county every year without once raising property taxes, and he transformed the region into a hub for good private sector jobs. A proven reformer, Dan eliminated patronage and streamlined county government, saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

As Governor, Dan will work to:

  • Ensure Pennsylvania is a leader in the new economy by encouraging private sector job creation and helping small businesses succeed and grow
  • Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of state government, while eliminating waste, keeping taxes low and fixing our broken property tax system
  • Pass important Harrisburg reforms, such as cutting the size and the cost of the Legislature, capping campaign contributions, term limits for legislators, and ending the ability of legislators to raise their own pay
  • Make the budget process work on-time and transparently; permanently dock the Governor and Legislature's pay for each day if it is ever late

Dan Onorato
FOR GOVERNOR

The one candidate who will deliver the change we need.

Jobs

Dan Onorato has the experience and the plan to improve Pennsylvania's economy.

As Allegheny County Executive, Dan helped turn around the struggling economy of Pennsylvania's second-largest county, transforming the region into a hub for good-paying jobs. Today, the Pittsburgh region has one of the fastest rates of private sector job growth in the country, and Allegheny County's unemployment rate is lower than the state's and nation's.

Dan supports tax credits for companies that create new jobs, better job training and other initiatives that encourage job growth in every area of the Commonwealth. Dan knows what it takes to turn around an economy and help create jobs. He did it in Allegheny County and he can do it for all of Pennsylvania.

Reform

Dan Onorato will restore the public's trust and confidence in state government. He is not a Harrisburg insider, and he is the only candidate for Governor with a proven track record of making reform a reality.

As Allegheny County Executive, Dan enacted bold reforms that took on more than 200 years of inefficiency in county government. He stood up to members of his own party and eliminated party patronage jobs and replaced them with professional managers. And, he fought for comprehensive campaigq reform for elections in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

As Governor, Dan will clean up Harrisburg – including enacting Legislative term limits and reducing the size of the Legislature, curbing the power of special interests, and improving accountability and transparency in state government.

Fiscal Discipline

Dan Onorato will get the state budget under control and ensure tax dollars are spent effectively and efficiently.

Dan spent four years as Allegheny County Controller – the watchdog against wasteful spending and fraud. As County Executive, Dan balanced the budget every year without ever raising property taxes. And he saved taxpayers millions of dollars by streamlining government – reducing its workforce, cutting unnecessary spending, emphasizing efficiency, and consolidating services.

As Governor, Dan will ensure state government respects our tax dollars by eliminating waste, ensuring that only effective programs are receiving funding, cutting the cost of the Legislature, eliminating their $200 million slush fund and their "Walking-Around Money," and giving the public full access to how taxpayer dollars are spent.

Education

Dan Onorato knows that education will drive Pennsylvania's progress.

As Allegheny County Executive, Dan has championed literacy, academic support and after-school programs. He has also forged close partnerships with the region's colleges and universities, helping to launch job-training programs that prepare area residents for emerging sectors of the economy.

As Governor, Dan will strengthen the state's commitment to early childhood education and fulfill its obligation to help fund schools, which is essential to relieve the burden on local property taxes and increase student achievement. And, he will work to ensure that every family can afford to send their children to college.

Seniors

Dan Onorato has a proven record of standing up for older adults and making sure government is working on their behalf.

As Allegheny County Executive, Dan has consistently fought against an unfair property tax reassessment that could drive older adults and other residents from their homes. He has restructured county services to expand on independent living while providing skilled care where needed, and streamlined access to long-term living services.

As Governor, Dan will ensure that older adults receive the benefits and quality services they've earned, and he will shield homeowners from skyrocketing property taxes, support caregivers who help meet the needs of older adults, and protect against consumer fraud, elder abuse, and age discrimination.

Protecting Pennsylvanians

Dan Onorato will stand up to the special interests and put Pennsylvania families first.

Dan has spent his career fighting for average families. As Controller, he took on organizations that abused taxpayer money and exposed a big health care provider that gave away hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to top executives as bonuses. And, as County Executive, he has fought for economic opportunities for working men and women.

As Governor, Dan will ensure that state government protects Pennsylvanians and not the interests of powerful industries like oil and gas, health insurance companies, and Wall Street banks.

A lifelong Pennsylvanian, Dan Onorato was raised in a working-class neighborhood on Pittsburgh's North Side. He graduated from Penn State and received his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Onorato has served as Allegheny County Executive since 2004 and was unopposed for re-election in 2007. Prior to being elected County Executive, Onorato served as Allegheny County Controller and a Pittsburgh City Councilman. Dan and his wife Shelly reside in the Brighton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh with their three children.
