 MD State Board of Elections

Notes:
In a re-match of the 2006 contest, Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) defeated former Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) as well as three third party candidates by a comfortable double digit margin.

After losing his 2006 re-election bid, Ehrlich opened the Maryland office of the Womble Carlyle law firm.  He launched his comeback bid at a rally in Rockville on Apr. 7, 2010.  On June 30 he named Mary Kane, who had served as his Secretary of State and Deputy Secretary of State, and more recently worked at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, as his running mate.  Ehrlich won the Sept. 14 primary with 75.8% of the vote.

O'Malley and Ehrlich debated several times:
Oct. 11 - WJZ-TV in Baltimore.
Oct. 14 - The Washington Post, WUSA Channel 9 and WAMU 88.5FM in Washington, DC (>).
Oct. 21 - WOLB 1010AM radio.

President Obama rallied with O'Malley and Democratic candidates in Bowie on Oct. 17 (>).

In a clumsy last ditch move, a consultant to the Ehrlich campaign placed an Election Day robocall to over 100,000 mostly black voters telling them they could "relax" and "watch it on TV tonight."  The consultant and campaign manager were later convicted of violating election laws.

The outcome was not a surprise.  Democrats have a huge registration advantage; at the end of October, there were 1,957,989 registered Democrats (56.4%) to 925,722 (26.7%) Republicans and 528,600 (15.2%) unaffiliated.
