Notes: Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D) won a fifth term, defeating Dr. Eric Wargotz (R), a pathologist and president of the Queen Anne's County Board of County Commissioners, as well as Kenniss Henry (G) and Richard Shawver (C). The major party primaries were held on Sept. 14. Mikulski tallied 396,252 votes (82.3%) to top the field of seven candidates. Eleven candidates competed for the Republican nomination. Wargotz won with 93,490 votes (38.4%) followed by attorney Jim Rutledge at 74,404 votes (30.6%); all other candidates finished in single digits. There was just one 25-minute joint appearance, on Maryland Public Television's "Direction Connection," aired on Oct. 25 (1,2). Open Secrets reported that the Mikulski campaign spent $4.9 million for the cycle compared to $932,330 for the Wargotz campaign (>).
