Notes: Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D) coasted to a second term, defeating Chris Chaffee (R), a homebuilding contractor from Prince Frederick in Calvert County. In the July 19 Republican primary Chaffee obtained 20.78% of the vote to emerge at the top of the field of 10 little-known candidates on the ballot. Chaffee had some name recognition from two previous runs for U.S. Senate. In the 2016 GOP primary, with 14 candidates running, he finished second at 13.7%, trailing the winner and nominee Kathy Szeliga (35.6%), and in the 2018 primary, with 10 candidates running, he again finished second, tallying 24.1% of the vote to 29.2% for winner Tony Campbell. In the July 19 Democratic primary Van Hollen obtained 80.81% of the vote against Michelle L. Smith. Van Hollen had a huge fundraising advantage in the race, reporting $8.7 million raised, $7.0 million spent and $2.2 million in cash on hand (>). |
