 AZ Secretary of State

Notes:
Gov. Jan Brewer (R), who had been serving as Secretary of State, ascended to the governor's office on Jan. 21, 2009, when Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) resigned to take of the position of Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in the Obama administration.  Seeking a full term, Brewer easily defeated Attorney General Terry Goddard (D), businessman Barry Hess (L) and realtor Larry Gist (G).

In the Aug. 24 Republican primary, Brewer trounced three challengers.  Goddard was uncontested for the Democratic nomination.  He served as Mayor of Phoenix from 1984-1990, resigning in Feb. 1990 to run for Governor; he won the Democratic nomination, but Fife Symington (R) won in a general election run-off.  Goddard ran again in 1994, but lost the primary.  From 1995-2002 he served as Arizona Director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  He was elected Attorney General in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.

Illegal immigration was a major issue in the race.
On Apr. 23, 2010, Gov. Brewer signed into law the tough anti-immigration measure S.B. 1070 (>).  This led to protests and boycotts, and a judge issued an injunction blocking some of its controversial provisions, but  it was popular among a significant sector of Arizona voters.

There was one debate, on Sept. 1, sponsored by the Citizens Clean Elections Commission and broadcast on KAET Channel 8; all four candidates participated (>).  Brewer's 16-second pause during her opening statement attracted national attention and prompted some to question the state of her health.
