Notes:  Sen. John McCain (R), the GOP presidential nominee in 2008, won a fifth term, defeating former Tucson City Councilman Rodney Glassman (D)  David Nolan (L), a founding member of the national Libertarian Party, and Jerry Joslyn (G), a tech investor.

Major party primaries were held on
Aug. 24.  Three candidates competed for the Republican nomination (1, 2).  McCain won with 333,744 votes (56.25%), defeating Tea Party backed former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth at 190,229 votes (32.06%) and businessman Jim Deakin at 69,328 votes (11.69%); 593,301 votes were tallied. 

On the Democratic side, Glassman, who resigned from the Council to run for Senate, won with 100,307 votes (34.60%) followed by Cathy Eden, who served in the administrations of Govs. Janet Napolitano and Rose Mofford as well as a state legislator and a county manager, at 76,487 votes (26.39%), journalist John Dougherty at 68,589 votes (23.66%), and former labor organizer Randy Parraz at 44,435 votes (15.33%); 289,866  votes were tallied.

The four candidates debated once, on Sept. 26 at KTVK-TV studios in Phoenix (>).

The McCain campaign spent $22.2 million on the cycle compared to $1.3 million for the Glassman campaign (>).
