DEMOCRATIC PICK UP
Notes:
On Aug. 27, 2009 Gov. Jim Douglas (R) announced he would not seek re-election.  After eking out a narrow win in the very competitive primary, Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin (D) narrowly defeated Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie (R) for a Democratic pick up.  Shumlin obtained less than 50-percent of the vote in the November vote, so the state constitution charged the General Assembly with determining the outcome of the election.  Legislators formalized Shumlin's win in a Jan. 6, 2011 vote.

Five candidates waged an intense campaign for the Democratic nomination: Shumlin, state Sen. Susan Bartlett, Google executive and former state Sen. Matt Dunne, Secretary of State Deb Markowitz, and former lieutenant governor, 2002 gubernatorial nominee, and state Sen. Doug Racine.  VTDigger  reported that the candidates engaged in about 60 forums over a period of 10 months.  In the Aug. 24 primary Shumlin finished ahead of Racine by less than 200 votes.  Racine requested a recount, and not until Sept. 10 was Shumlin declared the winner.  The final official tally was Shumlin 18,276 votes (24.8%) followed by Racine at 18,079 (24.6%), Markowitz 17,579 (23.9%), Dunne 15,323 (20.8%) and Bartlett 3,759 (5.1%). Dubie (>) was unopposed in the Republican primary.

The general election campaign had a deci;dedly negative tone.  Debates included six of the seven candidates at Vermont Public Television studios in Colchester on Oct. 7 (>).
