Dear fellow Oregonian,

I believe that Oregon's best days lie ahead of us. But we can only achieve that future by shaping it together. We face tremendous challenges – in our economy, in education, in our finances and in how we provide for the needs of Oregon's communities and families.

I am confident we can meet these challenges, but it will take innovation and change – the kind of progressive change I have spent my life trying to bring to Oregon. It will also take changing how we engage with each other to solve our shared problems. We must recreate a political center in Oregon – the kind of operational Oregon Majority that has been at the heart of all our great accomplishments of the past. I know that Oregonians are not only ready for this kind of change, they are eager for it. What will it take? A clear understanding of what we must do, and the experience and commitment to make it happen. That is what my campaign for Governor is about.

A Record of Leadership

John Kitzhaber has spent his life serving Oregon, as an emergency room doctor, as a legislator and as a successful two-term Governor. He earned a reputation of integrity, innovative thinking and inspirational leadership that changed the Oregon landscape in a number of ways:

•    He authored the Oregon Health Plan, which expanded health coverage and improved care for thousands of uninsured Oregonians.

•    He helped deliver historic levels of funding for public education.

•    He led the state through one of the greatest economic booms in its history, brought to the state the first major renewable energy wind turbine manufacturer and laid in place the foundation for Oregon's development and reputation as an incubator of green jobs.

•    He defended Oregon's air, water and environment, including developing the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watershed. John also protected our farm and forestland against destructive development.

•    He reformed Oregon's Juvenile justice system, with an emphasis on prevention and earlier intervention with kids in trouble.

A Clear Vision

John has developed detailed plans to move Oregon forward in meeting the critical challenges facing us. These plans include:

Jobs for Today, Jobs for Tomorrow - An economic strategy that will help revive our economy in the short-term, while building a sustainable economy for our future.

Comprehensive Education Reform - A plan to erase the artificial boundaries between pre-school, K-12 and post secondary education; center on the progress of students; support educators; and ensure access to at least 2 years of post-secondary education to every qualified Oregon high school graduate.

A Sustainable Future - A strategy to protect our natural heritage and environmental values while bringing sustainable jobs to rural Oregon, and making Oregon a global leader in the clean energy economy.

Having grown up in Oregon, John Kitzhaber's commitment to Oregon is personal. As an emergency room doctor in rural Oregon, legislator, governor and father, John Kitzhaber has been fighting for Oregon for over 30 years.

Change that will work for Oregon

John Kitzhaber's record proves he knows how to change Oregon for the better.

• He delivered health care to hundreds of thousands of Oregonians.
• He created 128,000 jobs.

• He protected our clean water.

John stands up for Oregon, as he did when the New Carissa ran aground in Coos Bay. John took on the corporation responsible for the disaster, making sure they — not taxpayers — paid every penny for the cleanup of the oil spill and removing the wreck.

John has clear, specific plans that will make a difference for Oregon. Just some examples:

• A detailed plan that will immediately create 10,000 private sector jobs.

• Expanding access to early childhood education for all Oregon children.

• Requiring annual cost,effectiveness reports for all state programs, posted online where the public can see them.

A Clear Difference

Republican Chris Dudley is on the wrong side of Oregon families.
 
• Dudley has no plan for creating jobs now when we need them.

• Over half of Dudley's proposals cost the state money, with no way to pay for them.

• Most of that is in the form of expensive tax breaks for the wealthiest Oregonians, taking money away from our schools, our health care and Oregon's most vulnerable in the middle of a recession.

Dudley's plans will make our budget problems even worse, hurting Oregonians at a time that we can least afford it.
