 OR Secretary of State

Notes: Gov. Ted Kulongoski (D) was term-limited.  Former Gov. John Kitzhaber (D) narrowly defeated former NBA player and financial planner Chris Dudley (R) to keep the seat in the Democratic column.  Also on the ballot were Greg Kord (C) and Wes Wagner (L).

Kitzhaber
launched his bid for a third term on Sept. 2, 2009.  He served two terms as governor from 1995-2003 then was term-limited.  Kitzhaber started out as an emergency room doctor in Roseburg, and served 14 years in the legislature as state representative, state senator and Senate President.  Former Sec. of State Bill Bradbury entered the race on Sept. 17, but was seen as the underdog from the outset.  Kitzhaber easily won the May 18 primary by 242,545 votes (64.78%) to 110,298 (29.46%) for Bradbury and Roger Obrist (4.29%) of 374,404 votes tallied.

Dudley, a first-time candidate, announced on Dec. 16, 2009.  Eight other candidates competed for the Republican nomination; leading the field in addition to Dudley were businessman and 2008 GOP Treasurer nominee Alvin Alley, former state Sen. and 1998 GOP U.S. Senate nominee John Lim, and 1998 GOP gubernatorial nominee William Sizemore.  In the primary, Dudley won by 122,855 votes (39.11%) to 99,753 (31.76%) for Alley, 47,339 (15.07%) for Lim and 23,522 (7.49%) for Sizemore of 314,087 votes tallied.

All four candidates participated in a forum organized by the League of Oregon Cities on Sept. 25 (>).  There was just one televised debate; Kitzhaber and Dudley met on Sept. 30 for a debate organized by KGW-TV 8 and The Oregonian in Portland (>).

On Oct. 18 Dudley kicked off a "Countdown To The Comeback" bus tour in Lake Oswego.  The seven-day tour was scheduled to make 30 stops across 20 counties. President Obama rallied with Kitzhaber at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland on Oct. 20.

On Election Night Dudley led in early returns, but Kitzhaber pulled ahead as votes from Multnomah Co. continued to be counted.
