REPUBLICAN PICK UP Notes: Gov. Brad Henry (D) was term-limited. Oklahoma elected its first woman governor as U.S. Rep. and former Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin (R) defeated Lt. Gov. Jari Askins (D) by more than 20 percentage points. The primaries took place on July 27. All six candidates, Democrats and Republicans, participated in a primary debate at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah on July 21 (>). In the Democratic primary, Askins eked out a narrow win (>), defeating Attorney General Drew Edmondson by 132,591 (50.28%) to 131,097 (49.72%). In the Republican primary, Fallin tallied 136,477 votes (54.79%) defeating state Sen. Randy Brogdon at 98,170 (39.41%) followed by businessman Robert Hubbard 8,132 (3.26%) and businessman Roger L. Jackson 6,290 (2.53%). In the general election, Askins and Fallin debated twice: Oct. 19 - at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond; Oct. 28 - hosted by the Tulsa Metro Chamber of Commerce and OSU-Tulsa (>).
