 MA Secretary of the Commonwealth

Notes:
Gov. Deval Patrick (D) was re-elected, defeating former health plan executive and Weld-Cellucci administration official Charlie Baker (R), Treasurer Tim Cahill (I) and Dr. Jill Stein (G-RB).

The race had some interesting dynamics: Gov. Patrick had suffered from low approval ratings; Treasurer Tim Cahill's independent candidacy added an element of uncertainty; and State Sen. Scott Brown (R)'s surprise win in the Jan. 19, 2010 U.S. Senate special election shocked the Massachusetts polical establishment.

Cahill, a Democrat elected Treasurer in 2002 and re-elected in 2006, sharply criticized Democrats in June and July 2009 and formally announced his candidacy as an independent on Sept. 9.  In Jan. 2010 State Rep. Paul Loscocco (R) left the Republican Party and joined the Cahill ticket.

On July 8, 2009 Baker announced he would leave his position as CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care to run for governor.  He worked there for a decade, turning around the company.  Previously he served as Secretary of Administration and Finance (1994-98) and Secretary of Health and Human Services (1992-94).  Baker announced Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei as his running mate on Nov. 23, 2009.  Also seeking the Republican nomination in addition to Baker was Christy Mihos, who built a chain of convenience stores and had run for governor as an independent in 2006.  At the Massachusetts Republican convention in Apr. 2010 Baker won enough support to avoid a primary.

Stein, a medical doctor, was also the Green-Rainbow nominee for governor in 2002.  In 2006 she was the party's nominee for secretary of state.  She formally announced her candidacy in Feb. 2010.

Patrick formally announced his re-election bid on Apr. 10, 2010.  He was unopposed for the Democratic nomination at party's convention in Worcester in June.

The nominations decided, the Sept. 14 gubernatorial primaries were non-events.

All four candidates participated in three debates:

Sept. 7 - WBZ-TV in Boston (>);

Sept. 21 - at WGBH-TV studios in Boston;

Oct. 21 - WWLP-TV in Springfield (>);

The wheels came off Cahill's campaign in Sept. 2010, as his running mate quit the ticket and endorsed Baker.  President Obama rallied with Patrick in Boston on Oct. 16, 2010 (>).

Patrick carried nine counties to four for Baker, en route to a 6.42 percentage point margin.  Cahill obtained just 8.03% of the vote.  Stein, who presented herself as a progressive alternative to Patrick, fared poorly, obtaining only 1.43% despite her participation in the three debates.
