Summary: After nearly a year of preparations by the Nevada
State
Democratic Party,
the
First
in
the
West
Nevada
Caucuses
took place. The Iowa results debacle had some observers
worrying that disaster might
occur. Although there were incidents in early voting, the
Caucuses proceeded relatively smoothly. Nearly 75,000
Nevadans voted during
the four-day early vote period, Feb. 15-18,
and about 30,000 people turned out on Caucus Day
itself for a total turnout of close to 105,000.

OVERVIEW
Sanders achieved a decisive win. Of the 36 pledged
national
convention delegates, it was projected that he would win 24 to 9 for
Buttiegieg and 3 for Biden. Looking at the results by
county, Sanders won the majority of county convention delegates in 12
counties, Buttigieg in 4 (Douglas,
Lincoln, Nye and Pershing) and Steyer in 1 (Mineral). Although
Biden did not win the most delegates in any county, he finished second
(24.27%) in Clark County [Las Vegas], which accounts for almost
three-fourths (74.57%) of total county convention delegates.
Elsewhere he did
not do so well. In Washoe County [Reno], Biden finished fifth
(7.6%)
behind Sanders, Buttigieg, Warren and Klobuchar. In addition to
finishing first in 4 counties, Buttigieg finished second in 12 counties.
Edison Research entrance and
early voter exit polls (>)
showed
that
Latinos
accounted
for
17%
of
caucusgoers
compared
to
19%
in
2016
and
15% in 2008.
Sanders won
support of 50% of Latino caucusgoers compared to 17% for Biden, 11% for
Buttigieg, 9% for Steyer, 7% for Warren and 4% for Klobuchar.
Among Latino caucusgoers 45 and under Sanders won support of 67%.
Among all caucusgoers, Biden did well among seniors, gaining support of
29%, while the other candidates were all under 20% .
Sanders' strong Nevada showing, after he had won the popular vote in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, made him the frontrunner in the race for the Democratic nomination. He was, one observer noted, the first non-incumbent candidate of either major party to win the first three states. For a few days heading into the South Carolina primary, the question was "is Bernie unstoppable?"
