Department of State
Notes: At the time, this was most expensive Senate race in U.S. history. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, a total of $188.2 million was spent, $52.8 million by the campaigns and $135.4 million in outside spending (>). According to the FEC, for 2015-16 the Toomey campaign reported disbursements of $27.8 million compared to $13.0 million for the McGinty campaign (>). McGinty, who chaired the White House Council on Enviromnental Quality from 1995-98 and more recently worked as an executive in the energy sector, won the April 26 primary with 42.5% of the vote, defeating Joe Sestak (32.6%), John Fetterman (19.5%) and Joseph Vodvarka (5.5%). For the general election, McGinty replaced her campaign manager. Democrats and the McGinty campaign sought to make an issue of Toomey's support for Trump, particularly following release of the Access Hollywood tapes, but Toomey dodged the question, finally revealing, as he voted shortly before the polls closed on Election Day, that he had voted for Trump. Toomey and McGinty debated on the afternoon of Oct. 17, taped in KDKA studios in Pittsburgh and aired that evening (>), and on Oct. 24 at Temple University's Performing Arts Center in Pennsylvania (>). The Libertarian candidate, Edward Clifford III, an accountant with a financial services firm, was not invited to participate in either debate. Toomey won with a plurality of 86,690 votes (1.43 percentage points), a somewhat more comfortable margin that Trump's plurality of 44,292 votes (0.73 percentage points).
