PETE WILSON
UNITED STATES SENATOR
WASHINGTON, DC
Dear Fellow Californian,
For the past six years I have been privileged to serve you in the United States Senate. Throughout my tenure of public service - as a State Assemblyman, as Mayor of San Diego and now as U. S. Senator - I have always openly shared my record with the voters.
I am a strong advocate of the proposition that peace can best be secured by maintaining a position of strength, both at home and abroad. And I'm proud of my contribution to the creation of 600,000 new jobs, one of the reasons we have the lowest unemployment rate in 14 years.
As a member of the Special Committee on Aging, I've witnessed the ravages of inflation on the pocketbooks of our elderly, poor and disabled. By demanding a policy of fiscal restraint, inflation is being held in check and the fiscal integrity of the Social Security System is assured. And I have also led the effort for tough anti-crime and anti-drug legislation to protect all Californians, especially our senior citizens, from crime.
While California continues to grow, it is critical that we carefully manage our resources which is why I have constantly sought the acquisition of more wilderness and park land, protection for our wild rivers and opposed off-shore oil drilling. My experience has convinced me we can create necessary new jobs without sacrificing our quality of life.
I would be proud to continue to serve you as your United States Senator as there is much left to be done. I would be most grateful for your support. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Pete Wilson

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR CALIFORNIA
EXPERIENCED LEADERSHIP FOR CALIFORNIA'S FUTURE
PUTTING CALIFORNIA FIRST
TAKING A STAND FOR CALIFORNIA
Preserving Our Natural Resources
Pete Wilson has been described as a "Teddy Roosevelt" Republican for his twin beliefs of maintaining a strong presence abroad and conserving natural resources at home. His tireless efforts and effective statesmanship on behalf of responsible environmental protection measures will benefit all Californians for generations to come. Among Senator Wilson's most notable accomplishments are:
- Adoption of landmark California Wilderness Bill preserving 1.7 million acres of open space.
- Designation of the Tuolumne, Kern and Merced Rivers as Wild and Scenic Rivers.
- Current moratorium on unwarranted drilling for oil off California shores.
- Acceleration of military toxic clean-up projects in California.
- Promotion of legislation to strengthen anti-air pollution laws.
Keeping America Strong"Political insiders say that Republican Senator Pete Wilson ... has been extremely effective in getting things done in Washington."
- Christian Science Monitor
June 16, 1986
Recognized as a leading Senate authority on the military and strategic nuclear forces, Pete Wilson has led efforts to improve America's military readiness and efficiency. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Wilson conducted whistle-blowing investigations into mismanagement of military supplies which resulted in better Pentagon control of arms, ammunition and supply inventories. Senator Wilson is also an advocate of nuclear arms control agreements providing compliance can be verified and enforced.
Pete Wilson is a vigorous proponent of human rights as evidenced by his efforts to secure ratification of the anti-genocide treaty. He is a staunch supporter of lsrael and an ardent backer of freedom in Afghanistan, Angola and Central America. Senator Wilson is a vocal critic of any initiative that could be construed as exchanging arms for hostages and he is known for his tough stand against international terrorism.
Saving Taxpayers Millions
In a time of record trade and budget deficits, Pete Wilson has been a forceful advocate for greater fiscal restraint. His tenacious opposition to bureaucratic
inefficiency and wasteful spending has earned him the Watchdog of the Treasury award for five consecutive years as well as citations from the National Taxpayers Union and National Federation of Independent Business for his efforts to curb federal spending.
Senator Wilson has also waged a personal campaign against excessive spending by Congress itself. He was one of the strongest opponents to the Congressional pay raise and when it passed - over Wilson's strenuous objections - he refused to accept it and donated his to charity. Pete Wilson has also led the battle to ban Congressional newsletters, which cost taxpayers about $100 million a year.
Further, Pete Wilson is a strong supporter of:"California's Senator Pete Wilson deserves credit for voting against the $9,138-a-year pay raise that U. S. Senate members voted themselves the other day."
- Los Angeles Sentinel
July 16, 1983
- Balanced Budget Amendment.
- Giving the President authority to line-item veto wasteful spending.
- Gramm-Rudman bill requiring limits on government spending and reducing the federal deficit.
Fighting Crime and Drug Smuggling
Senator Wilson has been a leading
sponsor of tough anti-crime legislation including
broad-sweeping legislation to combat drugs and the
Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984. The
provisions of this legislation and other Wilson
positions on criminal justice issues include:
- Tightening laws on bail and parole.
- Establishing a fund for victims of crime.
- Distributing cash seized in federal drug raids to local law enforcement agencies.
- Authorship of legislation to permit use of military resources to combat drug smuggling.
"Pete Wilson has been a fighter for ... better use of our military assets to combat the drug smuggler and tougher laws to keep the narcotics smuggler off our streets."
- Senator Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ)
February 6, 1987
- Support of the death penalty.
- Opposition to California Chief Justice Rose Bird.
- Authorship of legislation to ban sale of drug paraphernalia by mail.
Protecting the Elderly
Pete Wilson has long been a champion of health care for the elderly as illustrated by his efforts to allow Medicare recipients to enroll in HMO's. He is cosponsor of a new comprehensive catastrophic health program which experts say is the largest expansion of medical coverage for the elderly in many years. Wilson has also sought legislative protection for seniors against unscrupulous sales schemes for supplemental Medicare insurance coverage.
In addition to seeking innovative approaches to providing quality health care for seniors at the least possible cost to the taxpayer, Pete Wilson has worked tirelessly to protect the fiscal integrity of the Social Security System. He has pushed for increased funding for Alzheimer's disease research and he donated part of his Senate pay raise for this research.
"Although California's No. 1 industry is agriculture, it has been many, many years since California has had a U.S. Senator like Pete Wilson to give farmers the support they deserve ... "
- Harry Cline
Editor, California Grape Grower
Promoting Trade Opportunities
Pete Wilson's unprecedented advocacy for California farmers as a member of the Agriculture Committee has earned him the support of California Agriculture including thousands of small family farmers. And, with one out of three acres grown for export, Pete Wilson has vigorously demanded fair treatment for U.S. farm products in world markets. Through successful legislation such as the "Wine Equity Act," he has persistently sought a tougher stance against trading partners who discriminate against American goods and commodities.
His tenacity resulted in the inclusion of California products as commodities eligible for export assistance. Similiarly, Pete Wilson has earned major support of California's well-known entertainment industry because he has battled for its rightful access to foreign markets as well as protection of their products from international piracy. Pete Wilson has consistently fought for what he calls his "Golden Rule" of fair treatment for all California products, and he got the U.S. Senate to adopt a resolution to help prevent Japanese importers from driving American microchip manufacturers out of business.
