CALIFORNIA
    Nov. 8, 1988 U.S. Senate

Tabloid, 11" x 17".
Isn't it time you had a Senator who will fight for you? A California leader who's made a difference for this state and all its people...

...then it's time to elect Leo McCarthy.
Q Do you agree that keeping our water supply safe from toxic dumping and protecting our most spectacular natural landscapes should be a top priority for a California Senator?
     So does Leo McCarthy.
His record of leadership on the environment as Speaker of the State Assembly, and as Lt. Governor of California since 1982, has earned him th enthusiastic endorsements of the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters.
Incumbent Republican Senator Pete Wilson, who bills himself as an environmental champion, refused to support Prop 65, the anti-toxics
initiative. He voted against strict enforcement of the Clean Water Act in the U.S. Senate. And he has stalled senior Senator Alan Cranston's Desert Wilderness legislation.
In fact, according to the League of Conservation Voters, only three U.S. Senators up for re-election have worse records than Wilson.
Leo McCarthy, by contrast, has never hesitated to take the lead on the environment. Safeguarding the health of Californians and the quality of life in this magnificent state—nothing else comes first.
That's exactly the kind of leadership we need in Washington.

"WHEN CALIFORNIANS NEEDED HELP TO PROTECT OUR PRECIOUS COASTLINE, LEO McCARTHY LED THE FIGHT. WHEN WE NEEDED SOMEONE TO PUSH FOR TOUGH NUCLEAR SAFETY LAWS, LEO McCARTHY LED THE FIGHT. THE BEST AIR QUALITY LAWS IN THE COUNTRY WERE PASSED BECAUSE OF LEO McCARTHY'S LEADERSHIP ... WHEN IT COMES TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, LEO McCARTHY HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE LEADERS IN THE HISTORY OF THIS STATE. WE CAN TRUST HIM TO CARRY THIS COMMITMENT TO WASHINGTON."

THE SIERRA CLUB ENDORSEMENT OF
LEO McCARTHY FOR UNITED STATES SENATOR,
JUNE 30, 1988.
Q Should our older Californians be forced to live in fear...or can they have the security of knowing they will be able to live with dignity and have the care they really need?
Leo McCarthy wrote California's landmark Nursing Home Patients' Protection Act. .. and fought for legislation making it practical and comfortable for older people to live with dignity in their own homes for as long as possible.
Incumbent Pete Wilson, on the other hand, scores only 21 out of 100 on issues of concern to the elderly.
He has repeatedly voted to cut Social Security and Medicare.
In fact, Wilson voted for three different budget packages that would have sent deductibles and premiums for California's elderly and disabled through the roof.

We have a clear choice....innovation for quality care at an affordable cost. Or the wholesale betrayal of millions of Americans.
Let's send a leader to Washington!
"I CAN THINK OF NO ONE WHO HAS BEEN MORE THOUGHFUL, COMMITTED AND EFFECTIVE ON BEHALF OF CALIFORNIA SENIORS THAN LEO McCARTHY..."

CONGRESSMAN CLAUDE PEPPER
Q Does "national security" mean letting Pentagon contractors get fat off corruption ... or making sure our children have a future?
Leo McCarthy has already proposed detailed reforms to get the fat out of defense spending. And he fully supports the pursuit of nuclear arms control.
Leo McCarthy supports giving men and women in the armed services decent pay, rigorous training, and modern equipment. Under his plan, contractors would have to guarantee their work.
And top Pentagon officials wouldn't be allowed to move into lucrative jobs with the contractors they're supposed to oversee.
Pete Wilson? His campaign has taken thousands of dollars from contractors now under investigation, and he never uttered a word as the Pentagon scandal unfolded. He's gung-ho for Star Wars, even if it means breaking the ABM Treaty. And he delayed supporting the historic INF accords when he learned that one of his biggest contributors might lose business because of it!
We need a leader in Washington who represents the needs of California ... not a few corporations obsessed with Pentagon profits.

  • Leo McCarthy wants to take money being wasted on Star Wars and invest it directly in drug interdiction and education. He's been endorsed by law enforcement organizations statewide.
Pete Wilson? He wants to put the DMV in charge of a $500 million drug testing program funded by higher driver's license fees!

  •  Leo McCarthy, as Assembly Speaker, Lieutenant Governor and Regent of the state university system, has a record of involvement in nuts-and-bolts education reform. Federal aid and local control are key.
Pete Wilson? The only action he's taken on education is to slash college loan programs nationwide.

Q Isn't it time to send a real leader to Washington ... a man the state's leading newspapers call "the sort of person who should be in public office but rarely is ... a skilled and seasoned official ... a mature and sophisticated leader ... an innovator"?
It's time for action. It's time to put our priorities back in order. It's time for genuine, proven leadership.
It's time to elect Leo McCarthy to the U.S. Senate. Vote November 8.

Send a California leader to Washington ...
