PETE WILSON

U.S. SENATE
THE RIGHT TRACK

The right track is the one that works, and Pete Wilson has been keeping
San Diego, the nation's 8th largest city, on the right track tor 10 years.

The three-term Mayor Wilson has built a reputation as both innovator and problem solver. San Diego's most recent accomplishment is the construction of the nation's first low-cost rapid transit system in four decades, on time, under budget, and without federal money—something almost unheard of these days. Little wonder that President Reagan declared: "Now, if we could only get San Diego to take over Amtrak!" Pete Wilson is the only candidate tor U.S. Senate who President Reagan asked to be the national vice-chairman of his campaign and Chairman of a transition team task force for his new administration.

Wilson, 48, has earned wide renown for his common sense conservative policies, sound land use planning, no nonsense attitudes on crime and the successful attraction of new, clean business to what is today America's sa1est city. According to the FBI, San Diego is the safest of America's most populous cities.

And, Wilson has attracted more than 250,000 new jobs to San Diego since 1972, an increase of 53% and twice as much as population growth. He slashed the unemployment rate in half!

He successfully obtained a charter amendment that provides for mandatory firing of striking city workers. And, during his administration the ratio of city civil servants to population actually declined.

Said tax crusader Howard Jarvis, "He wouldn't have needed Proposition 13 if they'd run their cities the way Wilson has run San Diego."

Pete Wilson is a candidate for U.S. Senate.

He has pledged give California the dedicated service this great state deserves in Washington. Pete Wilson will be a legislative partner to President Reagan, as he was when he served with then Governor Reagan in the state Legislature (1966-71).

"I want a state and nation in which every man and woman who want to can work and can afford the dignity of a job doing something useful every day.

"I want inflation under control, no longer ravaging the savings and deserved security of the old......no longer pricing the young out of the American dream of homeownership.

"I want America once again so strong in arms and so clear in resolve as to guarantee world peace against misadventure invited by weakness." Pete Wilson believes in the work ethic, not the vicious cycle of handouts.

"The best social program yet devised by man is a job," says Pete Wilson.

His county was the first to demand work for those accepting welfare or foodstamps and able to work and successfully culled the welfare rolls. Pete Wilson believes this "workfare" approach must be adopted everywhere.

Pete Wilson believes the elderly deserve to age with dignity and pioneered the use of city-owned land to provide decent housing for the needy senior citizen.

Pete Wilson knows that government is spending too much money without listening to our priorities. He believes in providing basic services.

Pete Wilson does not believe we have to lower our expectations. He believes in a California of high aspirations and high test scores. Of opportunity and energy, to match the will and energy of its people.

Pete Wilson believes in keeping more money in our pockets and out of the treasury of the government for the bureaucrats to spend. No wonder Barron's and the Christian Science Monitor called his administration among the most tight-fisted in the nation.

Only Pete Wilson knows how to deal with every good intention that won't work passed on by well-meaning legislators and bureaucrats.

Only Pete Wilson has successfully dealt with all those well-intended laws and regulations passed by Washington.

Wouldn't it be refreshing to send someone with his outlook and experience to the U.S. Senate?

Pete Wilson has proved effective leadership that works. Noted columnist George Will "Pete Wilson has proven to be a valuable rarity......a conservative who understands the discriminating but vigorous use of government power for conservative purposes."

The right track? Yes. On time, and under budget!

PETE WILSON: AN EFFECTIVE, WINNING CONSERVATIVE

For the last ten years, Pete Wilson has been Mayor of San Diego, America's 8th largest city -- a city larger than San Francisco, and second in population in California only to Los Angeles. He enjoys a nationwide reputation as an effective, winning, conservative mayor. Here's why:

PETE WILSON FACT SHEET

1.    According to the F.B.I., San Diego has become the safest of America's 20 most populous cities.

2.    Through conservative fiscal management, San Diego's bond rating has been improved to AA-1 one of the best ratings in the nation. Both the "Christian Science Monitor" and "Barron's" called San Diego one of the most "tight-fisted" cities in America.

3.    Prior to the Gann initiative, Pete Wilson sponsored and won a City Charter Amendment that placed even greater limits on San Diego City spending than the Gann initiative placed on State spending.

4.    During his 10 years in office Pete Wilson has actually reduced the ratio of city employees to city population.

5.    Tax Crusader Howard Jarvis said of Pete Wilson, "We wouldn't have needed Proposition 13 if they'd run their cities the way he's run San Diego."

6.    Pete Wilson sponsored and won a City Charter Amendment that requires that striking city employees be fired. When city employees threatened to walk out, Pete Wilson said "keep right on walking."

7.    In an unheard of accomplishment for modern day transit projects, San Diego, under Pete Wilson, built a mass rapid transit system on time, under budget, and with no federal funds.

8.    When federal government strings attached became too much, Pete Wilson told federal bureaucrats to "keep their money." Said Wilson, "If I'd accepted federal money, the transit system would have cost millions more, and not be finished yet."

9.    When President Reagan heard of the transit system's completion on time, under budget and with no federal funds, he said, "Now if we can only get San Diego to take over Amtrak."

10.    Pete Wilson is the only leading U. S. Senate candidate who President Reagan selected to be national vice-chairman of his campaign.

11.    Pete Wilson is the only leading U. S. Senate candidate who President Reagan selected to chair a transition team task force for his new administration.

12.    As chairman of President Reagan's transition team task force on Urban Affairs, Pete Wilson recommended that the federal government cut off federal funds to any city that imposes rent control.

13.    When rent control advocates came to San Diego, Pete Wilson raised a quarter of a million dollars, and campaigned against it, reversing the polls from 60% to 40% in favor of rent control, to two to one against rent control on election day.

14.    As the leading spokesman against rent control in California, Pete Wilson has campaigned statewide against rent control, and was instrumental in defeating it in Pasadena. Pete Wilson has repeatedly challenged Tom Hayden to debate rent control, only to have Hayden duck every opportunity.

15.   Pete Wilson is a leader on statewide issues of importance to the people. He is Southern California's chairman of the new anti-crime referendum, the "Victims Bill of Rights".

16.   Through aggressive recruiting and a favorable business climate, Pete Wilson has brought clean, new industry to San Diego, cutting unemployment in half, without damaging San Diego's open space or quality of life. Said the Signal Companies on their recent move to San Diego, "We think San Diego is probably the best run city in the country."

17.    Pete Wilson supports workfare -- not welfare. San Diego is the first county in California to adopt workfare, and Pete Wilson will campaign for it statewide.

18.    National Conservative Columnist George Will said of Pete Wilson, "He is a valuable rarity: a conservative who understands the discriminating, but vigorous use of government power for conservative purposes." (see #12 above)

19.    Pete Wilson is a winner. He won three races for the Assembly by the overwhelming margins of 62%, 71.6% and 72% respectively. He won three races for Mayor of America's 8th largest city by 62%, 61.8% and 62% respectively.

20.    Pete Wilson hasn't just voted on problems facing Californians. He has solved them. He's spent the last 10 years working with the good intentions of Congressmen and federal bureaucrats. Isn't it about time we sent someone to Congress who has more than good intentions? Pete Wilson, an effective, winning conservative.
