For Your Future

John Tunney
Fights for the Future

CHOOSE A SENATOR

When you vote November 2, you'll choose a Senator for six long years ... until 1982. You'll point the way you want our country to go when it comes to peace abroad, and jobs and justice at home ... and health care, the environment, energy, and honest government. The choice is clear: John Tunney has proven he knows how to fight – and what to fight for.

Time after time, in his six years in the Senate, John Tunney has fought – sometimes alone – to protect our future.

TO PROTECT YOUR MONEY

By voting to cut some $85 billion in new spending and by giving Congress important new budget controls, Tunney stands against needless programs.

Tunney co-sponsors the bill that will put government agencies out of business unless they can prove they're performing a job worth doing.

And to protect consumers and small businesses against corporate monopolies, John Tunney authored the first major anti-trust reform to pass Congress in almost 25 years.

TO PROTECT PEACE

Tunney, father of three children and a former Air Force officer, was the key Senator in stopping another Vietnam before it could begin. The Tunney Amendment cut off secret funds for the war in Angola before it could drag Americans into combat.

TO PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT

John Tunney's legislative work resulted in tough water quality standards and new noise control standards as well. And Tunney is fighting for federal protection of such areas as Lake Tahoe and the Santa Monica Mountains.

TO PROTECT OUR INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS

In the wake of the Watergate scandals, John Tunney was the first Senator to call for Richard Nixon's resignation on the floor of the Senate – almost a full year before Nixon finally resigned. He opposes the unconstitutional, repressive legislation called Senate Bill-1 which would limit free speech and freedom of the press. And Tunney was the only member of the Judiciary Committee to oppose the wiretapping of citizens not even suspected of breaking the law.

TO PROTECT OUR JOBS

John Tunney supports the Humphrey-Hawkins Bill for full employment, and his bill for tax credits to business to hire the unemployed will put 350,000 Americans back to work.

TO PROTECT OUR HEALTH

His bill to control chemicals that can cause cancer and other diseases probably is the most important health bill in Congress. He's worked for legislation to increase the number of doctors, to end abuse and fraud in nursing homes and for decent care for senior citizens and youngsters, the jobless, and for alI Americans.

FOR THE FUTURE

It's not going to be easy in the coming years to keep this government away from secret wars abroad, from spying on American citizens at home, from encouraging the growth of corporate monopoly and ever more costly government.

But John Tunney already has proven he can take on these policies, and at 42, he has the stamina and the vision to make the fight for a better future.

JOHN TUNNEY - Jobs, decent health care, curbs on government spending ... and he stopped our needless intervention in another Vietnam.

John Tunney fights for a Better America.

When it comes right down to it, Washington can come home to you like a knock on the door ... And a telegram about Americans killed in a distant war ... or a pink slip for a lay-off from work ... or a tax bill.

You've got to have a strong hand in the Senate ... to keep us out of a senseless war ... to create jobs, curb needless spending, and fight for decent health care.

YOU'VE GOT A STRONG HAND IN JOHN TUNNEY ...

TAXES
John Tunney was first to offer comprehensive budget reform for firm ceilings on government spending. And he voted to slash $85 billion in waste, and he backs the "Sunset" law to close down useless agencies.

JOBS
John Tunney supports the Humphrey-Hawkins Bill for full employment, and his bill for tax credits to business to hire the unemployed will put 350,000 Americans back to work.

PRICES
John Tunney opposed the vetoes and the Nixon-Ford Republican economics that have kept production down and prices up. With up to 10 million out of work and production off 30%, scarcity has fueled inflation.

SECRET WAR
John Tunney kept us out of another Vietnam by shutting off funds for secret involvement in the conflict in Angola.

ENVIRONMENT
John Tunney pushed for development of an efficient smog-free car engine, and his legislative leadership resulted in tough water quality standards and the nation's first noise control law. He continues to fight for federal protection of Lake Tahoe and the Santa Monica Mountains.

CLEAN GOVERNMENT
He's fought wiretapping and other government snooping on law-abiding Americans, and he was the first on the Senate floor to call for President Nixon's resignation – ten months before Nixon finally resigned.

HEALTH
His bill to control chemicals that, through use or exposure, cause cancer and other disease probably is the most important health bill in Congress. He's worked for legislation to increase the number of doctors, end abuse in nursing homes and in the treatment of senior citizens, and provide decent health care for all Americans.

JOHN TUNNEY HAS A STRONG RECORD

32 bills signed into law, more than any other first-term Senator ... And his votes have earned high marks from the National Council of Senior Citizens (96% ), National Farmers Union (95% ), Common Cause (94% ), and COPE (86% ).

At 42, with three kids - Arianne, 8, Mark, 12, and Teddy, 15 - John Tunney has been endorsed by Governor Jerry Brown, Senator Alan Cranston, and other leading Democrats in California.

John Tunney works to help senior citizens
who need a prescription, a warm meal, or a pair of eyeglasses.

John Tunney has fought for legislation for better health care, decent meals, improved housing for senior citizens.

He has also fought the small personal battles for widows, veterans, the blind, and the disabled when their checks were lost in the government bureaucracy.

He's helped thousands ... and he's shown how care and concern can cut through red tape in Washington.

THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SENIOR CITIZENS GIVES JOHN TUNNEY HIGH MARKS FOR HIS VOTES TO HELP SENIOR CITIZENS – A 96% RATING.

FRANK CHURCH, WHO CHAIRS THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON AGING, DESCRIBES JOHN TUNNEY, A MEMBER OF THAT COMMITTEE, AS "A FORCEFUL AND EFFECTIVE ADVOCATE FOR OLDER AMERICANS."

SOCIAL SECURITY
John Tunney has backed full cost-of-living increases and has fought Nixon-Ford Republican efforts to cut programs for senior citizens.

HEALTH CARE
He has fought to bring prescription drugs, eyeglasses, and routine checkups under Medicare ... He's worked to clean up the scandal in nursing homes, and worked for legislation for more doctors for the elderly – all essential steps toward his goal of national health insurance for all Americans.

MEALS
John Tunney worked for hot meal funds for seniors who can't cook for themselves at home.

HOUSING
John Tunney fought for low-cost home repair loans so senior citizens can afford to keep their homes. He worked for increased funds for low-cost rental apartments.

ALSO
He worked for funds for the Safe Streets Act for better law enforcement, wrote the Older Americans Legal Assistance Act to assure proper legal help, and worked to make federal dollars available to make buses and other public transit more accessible to senior citizens. And, without letup, he's fought for tax breaks for families and older Americans. He was among the first to propose reforms to put ceilings on government spending, and he voted to slash some $85 billion in needless spending.

BIG FIGHTS ARE AHEAD OVER HEALTH CARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, HOUSING, AND OTHER PROGRAMS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS ...

AT 42, JOHN TUNNEY REACHES ACROSS THE DECADES ... HE'S CLOSE TO HIS FATHER, WORLD CHAMP GENE TUNNEY, NOW IN HIS LATE 70'S, AND TO HIS KIDS – ARIANNE, 8, MARK, 12, AND TEDDY, 15 ... AND HE IS GOING TO KEEP RIGHT ON FIGHTING TO SEE EVERY AMERICAN GETS A FAIR BREAK.

John Tunney fights for Jobs.

A steady paycheck ... hope for the kids and the future ... These are real, everyday concerns ... And because you'll be electing your Senator for six long years, until 1982, you have a lot at stake.

JOHN TUNNEY SUPPORTS THE HUMPHREY-HAWKINS PROGRAM FOR FULL EMPLOYMENT AND HAS HIS OWN JOBS BILL TO PUT ONE MILLION AMERICANS BACK TO WORK ..

What about his Republican opponent ... Dr. S. I. Hayakawa? After 50 years or so teaching the art of words, whenever cornered by questions on defense, foreign policy or the environment, he often answers, "I don't know." But he's clear about one thing – He wants to turn the clock back on American labor.

The Republican is opposed to Humphrey-Hawkins ... He wants to weaken child labor laws, and says he'd like "an attack" on the minimum wage.

And Hayakawa wants the bracero program brought back.

JOHN TUNNEY SUPPORTS AMERICAN LABOR ... HE'S AGAINST TURNING THE CLOCK BACK ... HE'S OPPOSED TO TIRED, OLD NIXON-FORD ECONOMICS.

At 42, with three kids – Arianne 8, Mark 12, and Teddy 15 – John Tunney gives a damn about the future of this country. He wants Americans on the job, not on the dole ... And he's done a lot for the paychecks of America:

FAIR PLAY
John Tunney was out front for legislation to give full collective bargaining rights to construction workers, and he worked for pension reforms to protect retired workers.

WORK CONDITIONS
He wrote the bill to curb chemicals that, through use and exposure, cause cancer and other disease, and he fought for the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

CHILD CARE
He battled successfully for legislation to give working families a tax break for child-care expenses.

DECENT HEALTH
John Tunney has fought for health care for senior citizens, the needy, and the unemployed as an essential prelude to total coverage for all Americans.

SECRET WAR
He prevented another Vietnam by shutting off funds for secret involvement in the conflict in Angola.

FAIR TAXES
John Tunney was among the first to offer budget reform setting firm ceilings on government spending, and he's voted to slash $85 billion in needless spending.

The fights for labor aren't over ... More will be fought in the years ahead.

JOHN TUNNEY STANDS WITH YOU AND ALL AMERICAN WORKERS.

John Tunney for the future. Give him your vote on Nov. 2.
