GREAT STATE!
DEUKMEJIAN
GREAT GOVERNOR!

Remember Back? 1982

California was broke. The state couldn't pay its bills. Crime was up. Education had slumped. People were out of work. Businesses were closing shop.

The Comeback

George Deukmejian brought common sense, respect and stability back to California. He promised a balanced budget, better schools, safer streets, a cleaner environment, and a government that listens. Governor Deukmejian kept his promises.

  • A Balanced Budget
Governor Deukmejian inherited a $1.5 billion deficit. He paid it off. With firmness and consistency, he balanced the budget four times in a row and established a rainy day reserve. All without a general tax increase.

  • Better Schools
Governor Deukmejian made education California's top budget priority. He increased school funding to the highest level in nearly 20 years. Students are learning the basics again. Test scores are up. Governor Deukmejian is "the greatest public-education governor in my memory." —John Duncan, President, Assn. of Calif. School Administrators.

  • More Jobs
Over 1.5 million jobs have been created since George Deukmejian became governor. Under his guidance, California once again leads the nation in economic growth and innovation.

  • A Safer California
More than 250 California police chiefs, the California State Sheriffs' Association and thousands of officers on the beat have endorsed the governor and his record of support for tough laws to help them better do their job. In four years, over 20,000 additional criminals have been sent to state prison: Duke wrote California's death penalty law and he strongly opposes the reconfirmation of Chief Justice Rose Bird.

  • A Cleaner Environment
California has the nation's toughest laws to protect the environment from air, water and toxic pollution. Under George Deukmejian, these laws have been vigorously enforced. The Governor has signed 90 new bills to improve the management of toxic waste, more than doubled the funding for toxic cleanup and enforcement, and increased toxic-fighting personnel by 50%. His administration has participated in the cleanup of over 100 toxic sites, and millions of dollars in fines have been levied on toxic polluters.

A Leader For The Leadership State

For 23 years, as a state legislator, attorney general and now governor, George Deukmejian has fought crime and created new opportunities for the people of California. He brought California back to the future.

Experience, wisdom, integrity, leadership, commitment and common sense. George Deukmejian is that kind of governor. A responsible steward. A builder for the future. A leader for America's leadership state.

Fellow Californians,

It is an honor to serve as your governor. I'm proud of the progress we have made to restore excellence to our state. California is a leader once again.

I look forward to continue serving you so that together, we can build upon our achievements, and provide for all our children and grandchildren the hopeful, prosperous future they richly deserve.
