for California's Future

TOM BRADLEY
for Governor

Tom Bradley has been a fighter his entire life. Quietly and steadily he worked his way up to run for governor of the greatest state in the union. Determination and courage marked his every undertaking.

It's been a long but satisfying journey from the cotton fields of Texas where he was born to an unprecedented four terms as leader of California's largest city.

Bradley's family moved to California when Tom was seven, and he remembers that "reaching California was like reaching the promised land." His skills in scholarship and athletics allowed him to get a university education at UCLA and fame as a track star.

He joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1940. His assignments included counseling juvenile offenders, working as a vice detective and serving as watch commander. While working for the police department he attended law school and passed the bar in 1956. After 21 years' service he retired from the police department to practice law.

Soon after, Bradley was convinced by a group of community leaders to enter public life. Now, after more than 40 years of public service, Tom Bradley is running for governor. "I want to revive the opportunity and the promise represented by the California dream. Our best days are yet to be. California is on the brink of its greatest destiny," says Tom Bradley.

Senior Citizens

Tom Bradley cares about all California's citiiens and realizes that special attention needs to be paid to those older citizens who have given so much. He has given particular thought to the elderly and acted to make sure their concerns were considered in decisions. On issues such as Social Security, rent control, health care, utility rates, nutrition and recreation, as well as other important issues, Tom Bradley makes certain that the wants and needs and hopes of our senior citizens are met.

Education

California's system of public education used to be the envy of the nation. As a result of deelining standards, weak leadership and misguided funding cuts, the system is only beginning to recover from a severe crisis in public confidence. California now has the largest class size in the nation. Although the Legislature has introduced bills regarding special education programs, unsafe school buses and overcrowded classes, they have been vetoed. Tom Bradley's record proves a long-standing support of education.

Toxics

What does everyone talk about. but no one does anything about? No, not the weather—toxic pollution. Year by year the problems and fears mount, and we can no longer tolerate conditions that are making our air unhealthy, our water undrinkable and our land saturated with toxic chemicals. Tom Bradley understands that leadership to control pollution and clean up toxic waste must come from the state level. He will cut through bureaucratic red tape and crack down on industrial polluters.

Water

From the time the first crop was planted in California, water has been the most valuable resource. Continued efforts to conserve, dam, move and sell water have not satisfied the needs of people, farmers or business. Tom Bradley understands the needs of all Californians. He put together a water plan that will meet the needs of urban areas into the future without jeopardizing the Delta, the San Francisco Bay and vital recreation areas and scenic rivers through better use of conservation techniques.

Economic Development and Jobs

To keep California growing and its people economically healthy, Tom Bradley will use the same strategies and tactics that he's proved are successful. He has a remarkable record of attracting new business, industry and foreign contracts to create more jobs. Tom Bradley will make it his job to see that anyone who wants to work, can.

The Olympics

The unqualified success of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games proved Tom Bradley's administrative abilities and his praclical ingenuity. Financed by private business, which meant no cost to taxpayers, the Games provided a surplus of $230 million for Los Angeles. California needs a leader with the Olympic virtues of cooperation, excellence and achievement. California needs Tom Bradley.

A Governor...for All California

for a Proud and Prosperous 21st Century

California is on the verge of explosive economic growth that demands creative preparation, not passive stewardship. As we approach a new century we need leaders of vision and practical resourcefulness. Tom Bradley is the leader for today and tomorrow.

A MAN FOR ALL SENIORS

During a long and distinguished career in public service, Tom Bradley has proven that he is a man for all seniors. As a Police Lieutenant, City Councilman, and three-term Mayor of the City of Los Angeles, his record of accomplishments and service to seniors include:

* His outstanding leadership and support of the Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid programs against all attempts to weaken and cut those programs and their benefits.
* His creation of the Mayor's Office on Aging to coordinate senior programs, and advocate for senior needs, as well as oversee 15 multipurpose senior centers in Los Angeles.

Tom Bradley is far and away the best candidate for Governor of California for seniors and all the people.
