WHO'S BEST QUALIFIED TO BE OUR GOVERNOR?

This year is an important year for all Californians.
This year, all Californians, North and South, in small communities and larger ones, face important challenges. The quality of life that has made California special and the tremendous opportunities our state has offered are in danger of slipping away.
And this year, we must choose a new Governor.
We must decide which candidate has the wide range of experience we need and which candidate can build a better future for California.

WHO CAN BEST PUT CALIFORNIA BACK TO WORK?

Right now, more than a million Californians are out of work; the number of residential building permit applications has plummeted by forty-seven percent; half our sawmills have cut back operations or closed completely; and even our great high tech industry has stopped growing.
We need a Governor with a proven record of creating jobs.
     Tom Bradley has that record.
Tom Bradley has worked with the leaders of business and labor to improve the business climate.
And Tom Bradley's worked hard to improve ties and promote trade with foreign countries.
The result: the city's gained tens of thousands of new jobs, and foreign trade with Los Angeles has tripled while Tom Bradley's been Mayor.

WHO CAN MANAGE CALIFORNlA'S STATE GOVERNMENT?

California now faces a multi-billion dollar budget deficit.
Tom Bradley has already proved he has the ability to manage a budget. He's balanced the budget eight consecutive years by eliminating wasteful and unproductive programs and by saying no to a billion dollars in departmental budget requests.
And even before Proposition Thirteen, Tom Bradley cut property taxes in Los Angeles.
That's the kind of real management experience we need in our Governor.

WHO CAN PROTECT CALIFORNlA'S ENVIRONMENT?

Today, our environmental quality and our recreational areas are under attack and reckless drilling threatens our coastline.
Tom Bradley's been a leader in the fight against excessive oil drilling along our Pacific Coast. He hasn't been afraid to speak out against Secretary of Interior James Watt.
Tom Bradley's developed new ways to conserve fuel. The program he set up to promote car pooling and ridesharing has become a national model.
And Tom Bradley's promoted the preservation of parks and open spaces.

If you have not yet registered to vote and want to vote for Tom Bradley for Governor, there's still time.
To register, just go to your local post office, fire station, police station or library and fill out a voter registration post card.
     It's that simple.

WHO CAN MAKE OUR STREETS AND HOMES SAFE AGAIN?

Too many Californians are afraid to walk our streets or leave their homes at night. Too many spend more than they can afford on locks and alarms to protect their homes.
Tom Bradley worked twenty-one years on the police force fighting real crimes on real streets.
He knows we won't put a dent in our crime problem with easy answers, press releases, or magic solutions.
And Tom Bradley knows the Governor can make a difference.
He's developed a tough, eleven point anti-crime program that will mean the elimination of automatic parole and a fresh start in the fight against crime.

WHO CAN BEST MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR SENIOR CITIZENS?

Many California senior citizens are threatened by cuts in their Social Security and other retirement benefits—benefits they've worked hard for their entire lives.
Tom Bradley has proven he's a friend to our senior citizens. He's given them a voice in city government by creating the City Office on Aging.
Tom Bradley's opened senior centers in every area of the city and helped build homes for thousands of seniors.
And Tom Bradley's started new programs to provide nutritional services, special transportation, and protection against crime for our senior citizens.

WHO CAN BEST BRING OUR STATE TOGETHER?

California is a great state—a state made strong by its diversity. A state that is made even stronger when we work together and weaker when it's pulled apart.
Tom Bradley has worked his entire public life to bring people together.
That's why, when he was re-elected to his third term as Mayor, he received the largest victory in modern Los Angeles history.
And Tom Bradley was chosen by all the Mayors of our state—North and South—to lead them as President of the League of California Cities.

THE ANSWER IS TOM BRADLEY.

He knows how to fight crime, because he's been fighting crime his entire life.
He knows how to create jobs, because he's already helped to create thousands of new private sector jobs.
And he knows how to balance a budget, because he's done it as Mayor—for eight consecutive years.

If you'll be out of town or unable to get to the polls on November 2nd, and want to vote for Tom Bradley, here's all you have to do:
Just write to your County Registrar and ask for an absentee ballot. Be sure to print your name, the address where you're registered, and the address where the ballot should be sent.

TOM BRADLEY: A GOVERNOR WHO'S PAID HIS DUES.

From foot patrolman to Mayor of Los Angeles, from high school athlete to President of the National League of Cities, Tom Bradley's life has been the story of ability, hard work, and achievement.
Like many Californians, Tom Bradley was not born here. His father was a sharecropper in Texas who moved his family to California when Tom was seven.
Tom Bradley attended Polytechnic High where he excelled in football and track. He earned a scholarship to UCLA where he was a star quarter-miler on the track team.
After UCLA, Tom Bradley joined the police force and stayed twenty-one years—rising from foot patrolman to Lieutenant.
In 1963, Tom Bradley was elected to the City Council. He was twice re-elected and served in the City Council for ten years where he mastered the legislative process and earned a reputation for fairness.
In 1973, Tom Bradley was elected Mayor. Since then, Tom Bradley's been re-elected twice—increasing his victory margins each time and in 1981, receiving the largest victory in modern Los Angeles history.
Tom Bradley was chosen as President of the League of California Cities where he represented the Mayors of all our Cities—large and small.
And Tom Bradley's earned the respect of people from around the country. He served as President of the National League of Cities and on the panel to choose a new FBI Director.
Tom Bradley is married to the former Ethel Arnold. They have two daughters; Lorraine and Phyllis.

He doesn't make a lot of noise.
He just gets a lot done.
