"Utah could serve as a model for saving democracy."
April 25, 2022
In a divided Senate, Evan McMullin will act independently to protect our democratic republic and overcome its major challenges.
• America has reached a crossroads between its continued journey toward a more perfect union and a slide toward autocracy; we must do as generations before us and renew our pursuit of liberty and justice for all.
• We must start with an unyielding commitment to our natural freedom and equality, and then to facts, reason and knowledge.
• We must champion our democracy and its unparalleled capacity for human flourishing, while making needed reforms to ensure its survival and promise for every American.
• We must cherish our common humanity, value life and celebrate our diversity while promoting personal responsibility and the government's vital role for the common good.
• We must expand opportunity in education and work, rejecting cronyism and other corruption to ensure the equal chance for all people to find happiness and realize their potential.
• We must reject political extremism and division in establishing a new politics that honors the personal freedoms of a diverse people and finds common ground to solve problems.

MEET EVAN
Evan McMullin is a proud Utahn, former undercover CIA officer and chief policy director in Congress who ran for president in 2016 as an independent.
Evan grew up in a family like many in America, one that struggled to put food on the table and heat their home in the winter. At an early age, Evan learned the value of hard work, family and country.
Inspired by books and movies at age 15, Evan contacted the CIA and asked to join. He was told to call back when he was older. After graduating from high school and serving a two-year Mormon mission, the Agency recruited Evan into its student trainee program while he was in college. He alternated semesters between training at CIA headquarters and Brigham Young University until he graduated.
During those years, Evan served in Israel and Jordan studying Arabic and working for a refugee resettlement program, where he felt parallels to his own family. His mother's grandparents left Poland around World War II seeking greater opportunity in America, and nearly one hundred years earlier, Evan's ancestors were driven west and into the mountains of Utah by religious persecution.
The 9/11 attacks prompted Evan to serve undercover for years in hostile environments and war zones in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.
After completing his CIA service, earning an MBA at Wharton and working in the private sector, Evan was called back to service, advising Congress on national security and other issues. In 2017, Evan co-founded Stand Up Republic, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that leads efforts across the country o unite Republicans and Democrats against extremist movements and politicians in defense of American democracy.
America has reached a crossroads between chaotic decline and continued progress towards a more perfect union. Political extremes don't represent the majority of Utahns or Americans, yet they've polarized the nation and prevent us from overcoming major challenges. From droughts to forest fires, water shortages, the rising cost of health care and a never-ending pandemic, America requires leaders who unite instead of divide, finding solutions based on truth and common ground.
The Economist
"Evan McMullin's run against extremism in Utah is working, so far. The former Never Trump Republican, and now independent Senate candidate, is testing a new defense against the populist right."

SENATOR MIKE LEE: A DIRECT THREAT TO OUR DEMOCRACY
Texts messages reveal Utah Sen. Lee's efforts to overturn 2020 election
PBS, 3/16/22
If a very small handful of states were to have their legislatures appoint alternative slates of delegates, there could be a path.
I've been spending 14 hours a day for the last week trying to unravel this for him.
Please tell me what I should be saying.

THE PATH TO VICTORY
Control of Congress may come down to a Utah U.S. Senate race. Early polling shows incumbent Republican Mike Lee in danger with soft support, and the race is in a dead heat when challenged by Evan McMullin, an independent with a strong biography and unique profile.
Independent polling has Mike Lee polling around 34%,1 with his approval dipping below 40.2 With Utah Democrats formally joining McMullin's coalition and Senator Mitt Romney publicly declining to support Senator Lee, 3 Roll Call has listed Lee as one of the 10 most vulnerable senators this cycle.4

UTAH SENATE IN PLAY
A recent Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll shows Evan McMullin within striking distance of Mike Lee. There are a significant number of undecided voters whom we will need to communicate with to consolidate a winning coalition in the fall.

UTAH'S INDEPENDENT STREAK
Democrats and unaffiliated voters make up just over half of Utah's electorate, with registered Republicans making up the balance. Even among these voters, 40% are considered behaviorally independent, and in 2020, the state had the highest number of ticket-splitters (voters who selected candidates from multiple parties) in the nation.
Politically, Governor Spencer Cox, a moderate Republican who did not vote for Donald Trump, continues to be Utah's most popular politician. Sen. Mitt Romney's winning coalition includes a majority of support from Democrats, a majority of independents and Republicans. Finally, Donald Trump's support in Utah has been historically weak for a Republican and now hovers around 46%.
In 2018, Utah voters approved Medicaid expansion, independent redistricting and medical marijuana by ballot initiative. The Utah Compact, a document signed by business, community, and political leaders in support of humane immigration, has been hailed as a national model and guide for others.

"Not all the political news this year involves the rise of partisan extremism and government by rage. ... But maybe there is a limit, a point when people of good sense and good will band together to say no. As they have just done in Utah."

POPULATION SHIFTS IN UTAH
Utah's population is exploding-particularly among younger, college-educated, and diverse residents that show significant potential as the state trends more moderate and independent. Surrounding states like Colorado, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico are seeing the same trends. Additionally, more voters are moving into Utah than out of Utah. The 2020 census confirms one of the highest migrations of new residents into Utah in recent history.

Today, I'm announcing my support for Evan McMullin in the US Senate race. My decision may upset some. I know I won't agree with every position Evan takes. To fix what's broken in our politics, it's time to try something new. Utah deserves an independent who is free to look for good ideas and to work with anyone who helps solve problems facing our country. Evan McMullin can win. If principled Democrats, independents and Republicans join together in this movement, McMullin will win this race.

OPINION: Utah could serve as a model for saving democracy
It's Lee's sycophancy to defeated former president Donald Trump and his willingness to don the cloak of MAGA extremists that provide the impetus for McMullin's candidacy and the rationale for Democrats ... McMullin is candid that he will have policy differences with Democrats. But in his mind, that's besides the point. His candidacy envisions a cross-partisan, cross-ideological alliance to defeat MAGA authoritarians who put Trump above country and their ideology above democracy. If he is successful in Utah, he might inspire other
such collaborations.

Evan McMullin Wants to Bring 'Utah Way' to Washington's 'Broken Politics'
"And we have a different way of leadership here in Utah," McMullin said. "We refer to it affectionately as the Utah Way. And what it is, is a way of leadership that holds to principal but still finds common ground to solve problems. And I think it-has a lot to do with our history as a people - as a state. America needs Utah's leadership. America needs this kind of leadership that will, yes, still hold the principle, but find common ground to solve problems. We just can't afford to do anything less than that.''

Utah Democrats back independent Evan McMullin for U.S. Senate in a historic vote
It's an unprecedented measure for Utah's Democrats, who grappled between party loyalty or backing an outsider to increase the likelihood of defeating a Republican in November. The Democrats were motivated by the prospect of unseating Sen. Mike Lee, who is running for his third term this year, and won the support of Republican around 75% of delegates at his party's convention.

Utah Sen. Mike Lee braces for toughest reelection fight yet
The recent turn of events illustrate Lee's potential vulnerability in the rare Republican state where many conservative voters still harbor concerns about the former president. The release of the messages could test voters' tolerance for efforts to overturn the 2020 election and heighten Lee's delicate balancing act as he tries to fend off a pair of primary challengers and an independent Trump critic who has forged an unlikely alliance with Democrats to bring him down.
