Matthew Hoh served in the Marine Corps for ten years and went to war three times before courageously resigning from a civilian position with the State Department to fight instead for peace, healthcare, veterans, and working people. Since serving in the military, he has worked with people of all political backgrounds and has been featured in major newspapers, podcasts, online shows, and cable news.

CLIMATE CHANGE: WE NEED A REAL GREEN NEW DEAL TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE

The scientific consensus is that we have less than 10 years to stop runaway global heating from threatening the survival of human civilization and life on Earth. We need a real Green New Deal now to tackle the existential threat of climate crisis, and move our money from the war machine into creating millions of good, green, sustainable union jobs across the United States that cannot be outsourced.

• Invest in green energy, transportation, industry, agriculture, and infrastructure

• Support wind, solar, and other emerging green energy technologies like tidal power, green hydrogen, and smart grids

• Invest in public transit, including light rail,  high-speed interstate rail, and electric buses to  reduce car-based travel

• Ban destructive fossil fuel extraction techniques like fracking, tar sand mining, offshore drilling, mountaintop removal, and coal mining; end construction of new fossil fuel infrastructure like pipelines and storage facilities; and begin immediate phase-out of fossil fuel extraction

• Support regenerative agriculture to fix the poisonous agribusiness model and return sustainability to food production

• Invest in public housing to make city living affordable, incentivize local commerce and reductions in travel for basic necessities like groceries and social services, and establish pedestrian-friendly and bike-friendly communities

We can fund these needed investments through reducing military spending and increasing taxes on large corporations and the wealthy.

A real Green New Deal will guarantee a just transition, converting military and fossil fuel-dependent jobs to secure, sustainable jobs that are good for workers, communities, and our planet.

I went to war 3 times as a US Marine and a diplomat before finding the courage to pronounce these wars as unjust and immoral.

In 2009 I resigned from the State Department to protest the Afghanistan war surge and started speaking out against the endless war machine and the growing rot in our political system.
