Meet Jeff Merkley
Jeff's values were shaped as a working class kid from rural Oregon. The son of a sawmill worker, Jeff spent his early years in Myrtle Creek and Roseburg, Oregon, where his parents stressed the importance of honest work, good schools, and strong families. When jobs in the timber industry became scarce, the family moved to east Multnomah County. Jeff still lives in the same working class neighborhood, and his kids attend the public high school he graduated from.

Jeff's entire career is governed by a simple philosophy he learned from his parents: that each of us has a responsibility to make the community, the nation, and the planet a better place.

Throughout his time in the Senate, Jeff's primary focus has been restoring an economy to create the kinds of opportunities that gave him a chance. He led the fight to end the worst abuses on Wall Street, so Main Street will never have to subsidize other people's bad bets. Frustrated by the pace of assistance to homeowners facing fore­closure, Jeff devised a comprehensive plan to help struggling families refinance. His innovative solution gained endorsements from prominent economists. He has written several laws to give small businesses new tools to find financing and has forcefully argued how Washington needs to put more priority on job growth.

Throughout his career, Jeff has been focused on finding common-sense solutions that create opportunities for Oregonians. His bipartisan problem-solving as Ore­gon's first Democratic Speaker in 16 years prompted The Oregonian to describe that session as "Oregon's most productive in a generation." That's why he has been so aggravated by the dysfunction and paralysis in the U.S. Senate. Jeff has gained national prominence leading the fight to fix the broken Senate by ending the secret, silent filibuster that has been used to grind legis­lation and nominations to a halt.

Jeff and his wife, Mary, a nurse, have two children, Jonathan and Brynne, and an Airedale terrier, Sadie.
