 SD Secretary of State

Notes:  Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R) defeated state Rep. Susan Wismer (D) and Michael J. Myers (I).  The result was
one of the most lopsided races of the cycle.

In the June 3 primaries, Daugaard defeated former state Rep. Lora Hubbel, a broker/realtor by 60,017 votes (80.87%) to 14,196 (19.13%) and Wismer defeated Joe Lowe, a national incident commander, by 15,311 votes (55.49%) to 12,283 (44.51%).  Wismer named former state Rep. Susy Blake as his er running mate on June 25.

Also on the November ballot was Michael Myers, 78, a former hospital executive and law professor, running as an independent.  He tabbed Hubbel as his running mate after his initial choice for lieutenant governor had to withdraw for family reasons.

The three candidates engaged in four debates:
Aug. 20 - at DakotaFest in Mitchell;
Aug. 29 - hosted by South Dakota Farmers Union at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron;
Oct. 9 - SDPB-TV in Vermillion (>);
Oct. 22 - hosted by
KELO-TV.
