Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D) easily won a second term, defeating entrepreneur Barry Hinckley (R) by almost 30 percentage points.  Hinckley co-founded and served as president at Bullhorn, a company that sells specialty  software and earlier worked for the Better Boating Association and in the family business.  He ran unopposed for the Republican nomination; Whitehouse was likewise unopposed.  The two candidates participated in a debate hosted by WPRI-TV and the Providence Journal at Rhode Island College on Oct. 23 (>).  According to Open Secrets (>), the Whitehouse campaign spent $4.9 million compared to $1.7 million for the Hinckley campaign.
