Helping to close loopholes that send American jobs overseas
 
I sponsored legislation that would help bring jobs back to America by eliminating incentives that encourage businesses to ship American jobs to China and other countries.

Protecting Social Security and Medicare for our seniors
 
To fight against privatization and cuts to Social Security, I co-founded the Defend Social Security Caucus in the Senate and led the fight to close the Medicare Part D prescription drug donut hole – because these benefits are critical to the well-being of our seniors.

Making it easier to afford college
 
I have fought in the Senate to defeat Republican efforts to cut Pell Grants or raise student loan interest rates. We must make it easier for our kids to afford college.

Making sure the super-rich pay their fair share in taxes
 
I authored legislation known as the "Buffett Rule" that would require people earning over $1 million per year to pay the same tax rates as middle class families. It's not fair that the average truck driver or nurse in Rhode Island pays a higher tax rate than a billionaire.
