GREEN PARTY
HOWARD SWITZER FOR GOVERNOR
FOR A GREEN TENNESSEE
Today we face a series of major issues that threaten the very existence of humans on this planet. But the issues of climate change, the end of the fossil fuel era, terrorism and global economic collapse all pale compared to the one issue that keeps us all from addressing any of these issues in an enlightened and intelligent manner, the corporate control of all our major institutions. We have allowed electoral politics to become just another empty diversion keeping us from taking care of the important business of making a just society.

As an architect I'm used to looking at the big picture and have experience organizing teams of experts to do complex tasks such as building communities. We must design a new mode of human habitation, one that integrates the best of the past and present to build a better future, one that works in harmony with the natural world, of which we are an inseparable part, a vast network of self-governed, self-reliant, sustainable communities controlled by the people who inhabit them.

This is my Green vision, influenced by many other people I've met over my 65 years. I know we have the creative talent, skills, resources and the great American good humor that will be required to do this ... and we will need to do it in order to create the world our children deserve.

THE PROGRAM:

We begin by redirecting the state's priorities away from service to extractive corporate clients to re-establishing networks of viable, resilient and self reliant, self-governing, communities * Sponsor community dialogue projects for people to research and discuss what is best for their community * Perform community resource assessments to determine the resources available for building resilient local economies * Pursue land reforms to put communities in control of their lands * Equip communities with community scale technologies for food, fiber, fuel and energy as well as regional manufacturing of essential tools and equipment * Build new mass transit systems connecting communities * All nutrient and material loops to be closed, wasting nothing, operating within the limits of their environment and in harmony with it * Solar resources utilized to the max, directly or indirectly encouraging innovation and invention * Establish community banks, a state bank and local currencies as a bulwark against the funny money of Wall Street * Education integrated into the fabric of the community teaching real skills as well as critical thinking and problem solving * Security enhanced by designing stable, decentralized and redundant systems.

We embrace our nation's founding principles as articulated in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights and seek to further articulate all those inalienable rights necessary for our continued pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.
